TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a technique for monitoring a dispersion characteristic of an optical communication system transmitting a single wavelength or a wavelength multiplexed signal light, and more particularly to a technique for detecting a variation in dispersion by discriminating a received waveform level. The present invention relates to a dispersion monitoring apparatus and a dispersion monitoring method, and an automatic dispersion compensation system using the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
With the rapid increase in network capacity in recent years, there is an increasing demand for larger capacity networks. Currently, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transmission system using a base technology with a transmission capacity per channel of 10 Gb / s (gigabit / second) has been put to practical use. In addition, further increase in capacity is required in the future, and an ultra-high-speed optical transmission system having a transmission capacity of 40 Gb / s or more per channel is expected due to problems such as frequency utilization efficiency and apparatus cost.
[0003]
However, in such an ultra-high-speed optical transmission system, there is a problem that the transmission distance of signal light is limited because the influence of waveform deterioration due to chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion and the like on transmission quality increases. . Therefore, in order to realize an ultrahigh-speed optical system, an automatic dispersion compensation system that detects fluctuations in chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion and compensates with high accuracy is required.
[0004]
In general, the cause of the deterioration of transmission quality in an optical communication system is, for example, as shown in FIG. 30, the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) due to attenuation of signal light or increase of noise light. Deterioration is roughly classified into deterioration of the optical waveform shape itself. Further, causes of the latter waveform deterioration include chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and non-linear effects.
[0005]
Here, the chromatic dispersion will be described in detail. In an optical communication system having a transmission speed exceeding 10 Gb / s, the tolerance for chromatic dispersion is significantly reduced. For example, the chromatic dispersion tolerance in a system that transmits a 40 Gb / s NRZ signal light is 100 ps / nm or less. In addition, since the distance of the relay interval in an optical communication system is generally not constant, for example, in the case of a system using a 1.3 μm zero-dispersion single mode fiber (SMF) having a characteristic of a chromatic dispersion value of 17 ps / nm / km. Will deviate from the chromatic dispersion tolerance as described above only when the distance of the relay section differs by several kilometers.
[0006]
On the other hand, an optical fiber transmission line owned by a communication carrier is not accurately grasped about a distance and a chromatic dispersion value for each relay section, and is based on a fixed dispersion compensation method using a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) or the like. It is often difficult to achieve chromatic dispersion compensation with high accuracy. Furthermore, since the chromatic dispersion value changes over time due to the effects of the temperature and stress of the optical fiber, the amount of chromatic dispersion is measured not only at the start of operation of the system but also during the operation of the system while strictly measuring the chromatic dispersion. It needs to be adjusted optimally.
[0007]
For example, the amount of chromatic dispersion that occurs when a temperature variation of 100 ° C. is assumed for a transmission path having a length of 500 km using DCF as a type of optical fiber is as follows.
The amount of chromatic dispersion described above is almost equal to the chromatic dispersion tolerance when transmitting the NRZ signal light of 40 Gb / s. Therefore, an automatic chromatic dispersion compensation system that constantly monitors the chromatic dispersion characteristics of a transmission line and performs optimal control of the amount of chromatic dispersion compensation is not limited to a system using an SMF as a transmission line, but also to a 1.55 μm zero dispersion shift fiber (DSF). ) Or a non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) as a transmission line.
[0008]
Next, the polarization mode dispersion will be described in detail. Polarization mode dispersion is dispersion caused by different propagation delay times of polarization components (for example, two mode lights such as a TE mode and a TM mode) in an optical signal, and can occur in any optical fiber. . In general, the influence of the polarization mode dispersion increases as the transmission speed of the optical signal increases, and increases as the transmission distance of the optical signal increases, and the effect cannot be ignored.
[0009]
In addition, optical fibers constituting an old optical transmission line mainly laid outside of Japan include 1 ps / km per unit length. 1/2 (Picosecond / km 1/2 Some of them are said to have a large polarization mode dispersion value exceeding ()). When short-distance transmission such as 50 km is performed using such an optical fiber, an optical delay difference Δτ generated between two polarization components of the transmission light corresponds to one time slot of the NRZ signal light of 40 Gb / s. 7 ps or more for 25 ps. Therefore, similarly to the case of the chromatic dispersion described above, the transmission distance is limited by the influence of the polarization mode dispersion. Actually, since it is necessary to provide a member for generating polarization mode dispersion, such as an optical amplifier and a chromatic dispersion compensator, on the transmission line of the optical communication system, the transmission distance of the signal light may be further limited. In addition, since the polarization mode dispersion shows changes with time due to stress and temperature changes applied to the optical fiber, the state of the polarization mode dispersion of the transmission line is monitored not only during installation but also during operation, and the Need to compensate.
[0010]
As described above, chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion are major factors that limit the performance of an optical communication system, and in order to improve the performance of an optical communication system, these dispersions are dynamically compensated, that is, automatic dispersion. A dispersion compensation system is required. Elemental technologies for realizing the automatic dispersion compensation system can be summarized, for example, into the following three (a) to (c).
(A) Realization of variable dispersion compensator
(B) Realization of dispersion value monitor of transmission line
(C) Realization of feedback control method for optimizing the compensation amount of variable dispersion compensator
Regarding the tunable dispersion compensator of the above (a), as a tunable chromatic dispersion compensator that has been proposed so far, a variably compensated chromatic dispersion compensator described as prior art document information described later, for example, a virtual imaged phased array ( There is a Virtually Imaged Phased Array (VIPA), a tunable ring resonator described in Non-Patent

For the dispersion value monitor of the above (b), for example, as a conventional method of measuring a chromatic dispersion value, a plurality of lights having different wavelengths are input to an optical fiber, and a group delay and a phase difference between output lights are measured. Methods and phase methods have been proposed. However, in order to constantly measure chromatic dispersion without deteriorating communication quality during system operation using these measurement methods, there is a problem that one set of chromatic dispersion measuring devices is required for each relay section, There is a problem that it is necessary to multiplex measurement light having a wavelength different from that of the data signal, and the above-described measurement method is not practical from the viewpoint of economy and apparatus size.

Known methods for monitoring the polarization mode dispersion include, for example, an extinction method (Senamont method), a rotating analyzer method, a rotating phase shifter method, and a phase modulation method. [0020]
The present invention has been made by paying attention to the above points, and provides a dispersion monitoring apparatus and a dispersion monitoring method capable of easily monitoring a change in dispersion characteristics of an optical communication system with high accuracy and using the same. It is an object to provide an automatic dispersion compensation system.
[0021]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, a dispersion monitoring device of the present invention is a device for monitoring dispersion characteristics of an optical communication system, and a reception signal obtained by photoelectrically converting a signal light transmitted through the optical communication system is input, A data flip-flop that determines whether an input signal is at a high level or a low level by setting a discrimination phase and a discrimination threshold, and outputs the discrimination result as a logical value; and a logic output from the data flip-flop. An integration circuit for averaging the values, and a dispersion detection unit for detecting a variation in dispersion occurring in the optical communication system according to a level change of a signal output from the integration circuit. is there.
[0022]
In the dispersion monitoring device having such a configuration, in the data flip-flop, the identification process of determining whether the received signal level is at the high level or the low level with respect to the identification threshold is performed at a timing corresponding to the identification phase, and the identification result is obtained. Is output to the integration circuit. In the integration circuit, the logical value from the data flip-flop is time-integrated and averaged, and the result is output to the dispersion detection unit. The dispersion detector determines a change in the received waveform according to a change in the level of the output signal from the integration circuit, and detects a change in dispersion occurring in the optical communication system. This makes it possible to configure the dispersion monitor using a circuit that is slower than the transmission speed of the signal light, and it is possible to detect the dispersion fluctuation occurring in the optical communication system with high accuracy. .
[0023]
Further, the automatic dispersion compensation system of the present invention is a system using the dispersion monitoring device as described above, wherein a variable dispersion compensator arranged on a transmission line and a variable dispersion compensator are arranged on the receiving side of the variable dispersion compensator. In response to the fluctuation of the dispersion detected by the dispersion monitoring device, the amount of dispersion compensation in the tunable dispersion compensator is feedback-controlled so that the fluctuation is reduced, so that the dispersion generated in the signal light propagated through the transmission path is reduced. And a control circuit that automatically compensates for
[0024]
According to the automatic dispersion compensation system having such a configuration, the dispersion compensation amount of the variable dispersion compensator is feedback-controlled in accordance with the dispersion fluctuation monitored with high accuracy by the dispersion monitoring device as described above, so that the transmission line Automatically compensates for the dispersion that occurs in the signal light that has propagated.
[0025]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
FIG. 1 is a configuration diagram showing a first embodiment of the automatic dispersion compensation system of the present invention.
In FIG. 1, the present automatic dispersion compensation system performs, for example, a signal light propagating through a

The monitor system includes, for example, a branching

[0028]
Next, the operation of the automatic dispersion compensation system will be described.
First, the basic principle of the dispersion monitoring method according to the present invention will be specifically described with reference to the received waveform simulation results shown in FIGS. The simulation results of FIGS. 2 to 4 show that the chromatic dispersion values are 0 ps / nm and −10 ps /, for example, under the condition that the transmission speed of the signal light is 40 Gb / s and the negative α parameter (α = −1) is a condition. It shows each received waveform when it is changed to nm and -20 ps / nm. Note that this simulation does not consider the nonlinear effect and the polarization mode dispersion.
[0029]
2 to 4, it can be seen that the spread of the waveform progresses as the negative chromatic dispersion value decreases (the absolute value of the chromatic dispersion increases). This dispersion monitoring method detects the fluctuation of the chromatic dispersion by utilizing the property that the received waveform changes with the change of the chromatic dispersion value as described above. Specifically, regarding the received waveform, attention is particularly paid to the pattern “1” of... 0, 1, 0,. It can be seen that the high level of the received waveform corresponding to "1" does not rise as the chromatic dispersion value increases, as shown by the portion surrounded by the broken circle in FIGS. Therefore, the dispersion monitoring method determines a change in chromatic dispersion by detecting such a change in the received waveform using the

As described above, according to the automatic dispersion compensation system of the first embodiment, the change in the reception waveform caused by the change in the chromatic dispersion is detected by using the

Next, a second embodiment of the automatic dispersion compensation system of the present invention will be described.
FIG. 7 is a configuration diagram illustrating the automatic dispersion compensation system according to the second embodiment. The same parts as those in the configuration of the first embodiment shown in FIG. 1 are denoted by the same reference numerals, and the same applies to other embodiments.
7, the configuration of the automatic dispersion compensation system of the second embodiment is different from that of the first embodiment in that two sets of monitor systems are provided in parallel to detect chromatic dispersion. Other configurations are the same as in the first embodiment.
[0033]
Specifically, the monitor signal split by the

[0035]
Therefore, in the automatic dispersion compensation system of the present embodiment, two sets of monitor systems are provided, and the identification threshold Vth1 and the identification phase T1 in one monitor system and the identification threshold Vth2 and the identification phase T2 in the other monitor system are shown in FIG. By setting the relationship as shown in FIG. 8 and the bold line in FIG. 9, it is possible to detect an increase in chromatic dispersion when waveform compression occurs. Specifically, the discrimination threshold Vth1 and the discrimination phase T1 are set in the same manner as in the first embodiment. For the discrimination threshold Vth2 and the discrimination phase T2, for example, the pulse “1” in the bit string... Is set so that the level determination is performed for the rising part of Thus, in the case where the chromatic dispersion value is +30 ps / nm (FIG. 8) and the case where the chromatic dispersion value is +50 ps / nm (FIG. 9), there is no change in the identification result by the combination of the identification threshold Vth1 and the identification phase T1, but the identification threshold Vth2. A difference occurs in the identification result by the combination of the identification phase T2. This makes it possible to detect an increase in the chromatic dispersion value when waveform compression has occurred. Of course, the decrease in the chromatic dispersion when the waveform spread occurs can be detected in the same manner as in the first embodiment based on the identification result by the combination of the identification threshold Vth1 and the identification phase T1. .
[0036]
As described above, according to the automatic dispersion compensation system of the second embodiment, the change in the waveform of the monitor signal is detected using the two sets of
[0037]
In the above-described second embodiment, two sets of DFFs and integration circuits are provided to monitor chromatic dispersion. However, for example, by further increasing the number of combinations of DFFs and integration circuits, the chromatic dispersion value can be increased or decreased. The detection can be performed in stages, and the detection accuracy of the chromatic dispersion value can be further improved.
Next, a third embodiment of the automatic dispersion compensation system of the present invention will be described.

FIG. 10 is a configuration diagram illustrating an automatic dispersion compensation system according to the third embodiment.
