従来より、バーコードデータは商品管理として広く利用されており、商品には必ずバーコードが付けられている。これらのデータは専用の読み取り装置で読み取られ、コンピュータにより情報処理され商品情報としてデータベース構築されている。消費者がこのバーコード情報を簡単に読み取ることが出来れば、その情報を利用し、あらゆる場所からアクセスすることが出来、オンライン販売が可能になる。
