本発明は、光通信、光交換、光情報処理などを行う光伝送システムにおいて、様々な波長で発振する波長可変光源を内蔵する波長可変光源内蔵装置および波長可変光生成方法に関する。

【従来の技術】
様々な波長の光を自在に扱う柔軟な波長分割多重(WDM)ネットワークにおいては、様々な波長で発振可能な波長可変光源を内蔵する波長可変光源内蔵装置が必要となる。

図12に、従来の波長可変光源内蔵装置の構成を示す。図12において、1001は波長可変光源、1002は波長可変光源内蔵装置、1003は出力用光導波路である。波長可変光源1001は、波長制御信号により、発振可能な複数の波長の一つで発振し、出力光は、出力用光導波路1003から出力される。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
一般に、波長可変光源1001への波長選択信号(波長制御信号)が切り替わるときに、望ましくない波長で短時間発振しうるため、従来の波長可変光源内蔵装置1002においては、望ましくない波長での光出力(以後、そのような光を不要光と呼ぶ)があった。その様子を図13に示す。同図において、横軸・縦軸はそれぞれ時間・発振波長である。横線は、その時間内に、その波長で出力用光導波路からの出力があることを示す。はじめに、波長λ0で発振していたとする。ある時刻に、波長λ0→λ1へ切り替える波長制御信号が波長可変光源1001に与えられたとする。波長可変光源1001はこの波長制御信号に瞬時に応答できないため、有限の時間Δt後に波長可変光源1001は所望の波長λ1で発振し始める。つまり、有限の時間Δtの間は不要な波長(望ましくない波長)で発振しているため、不要光が出力用光導波路1003から出力されることとなる。この不要光が外部へ出力されると、他の場所からの同一波長の光と干渉してしまい、光伝送システムにおいて好ましくない。

本発明は、上述の点に鑑みてなされたもので、その目的は、波長可変光源が不要光を出力している間、その不要光の出力を遮断することにより、出力用光導波路に不要光が出力されないように図った波長可変光源内蔵装置および波長可変光生成方法を提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的を達成するため、本発明の波長可変光源内蔵装置の第1の形態は、
波長制御信号により発振波長を選択可能な波長可変光源と、前記波長可変光源の出力部に接続され、かつ不要な波長の光を遮断する機能を持つ光ゲート器と、前記ゲート器に接続された出力用光導波路と、前記発振波長の切替前の波長の光の最後尾が前記光ゲート器に到達する前に前記光ゲート器を遮断させ、前記切替後の波長の光の先頭が前記光ゲート器に到達した後に前記光ゲート器を透過させる光ゲート制御信号を生成する光ゲート制御信号生成手段とを有することを特徴とする。

以下、図面を参照して本発明の実施の形態を詳細に説明する。

[第1の実施形態]
図1は、本発明の第1の実施形態における波長可変光源内蔵装置の構成を示す。図1において、101は波長可変光源、102は波長可変光源内蔵装置、103は出力用光導波路、104は光ゲート器である。波長可変光源101から出力された光は、光ゲート器104に到達する。波長を変化させない定常時は、光ゲート器104は透過の状態にしておく。

光ゲート器104の透過及び遮蔽のタイミングに関して、図2および図3を用いて説明する。図2の横軸・縦軸はそれぞれ波長可変光源と光ゲート器間の位置(場所)・発振波長である。横線は、その時間にその位置(場所)において光が存在することを示す。

波長可変光源101の一例として、図5の(a)に分布反射型(DBR)レーザの断面構造を示す。ここで、501は活性領域、502は分布反射領域、503は駆動用電極、504は波長制御用電極である。駆動用電極503を介して活性領域501に電流を注入し、レーザ発振させる。また、波長制御用電極504を介して分布反射領域502に電流を注入し、屈折率を変化させる。この屈折率変化により分布反射領域502における反射波長が変化するため、レーザの発振波長を変化させることができる。

光ゲート器104の一例として、図6に半導体光増幅素子を用いた光ゲート器の断面構造を示す。ここで、601は活性領域、602は電極である。電極602を介して電流が活性領域601に注入されている時は、入力光が活性領域601により増幅され、ゲートが透過状態となる。一方、電流が活性領域601に注入されていないときは、活性領域601は損失媒体となるため、入力光は損失を起こし、ゲートは遮断状態となる。

一方、波長可変光源101は、波長制御信号に応じた波長(λCWとする)で発振するものとする。この発振光は、第1の多モード干渉(MMI)型カプラ若しくは方向性結合器801aにより2つに分岐されて、一方の分岐光は第2の多モード干渉(MMI)型カプラ若しくは方向性結合器801bを経由して第1の半導体光増幅素子802aに入射し、他方の分岐光は直接第2の半導体光増幅素子802bに入射される。第1の半導体光増幅素子802a及び第2の半導体光増幅素子802bからの出力光は、第3の多モード干渉(MMI)型カプラ若しくは方向性結合器801cにより再び合波される。すなわち、マッハツェンダ干渉系が形成されている。この時、半導体光増幅素子802aの屈折率が入力信号光により変調されているため、干渉路間の位相差が変化する。入力信号光のビットがON,OFFの時、干渉路間の位相差がπの奇数倍、若しくは偶数倍になるように設定することにより、波長がλCWに変換された波長変換光信号が波長変換回路706から出力される。また同時に、入力用光導波路705から入射した入力光信号もまた、波長変換回路706から出力される。入力光信号が不要であれば、光フィルタ(図示しない)を入力用光導波路705上に配置して、入力光信号を除去すればよい。

一方、波長可変光源101は、波長制御信号に応じた波長(λCWとする)で発振するとする。この発振光は、第1の多モード干渉(MMI)型カプラ若しくは方向性結合器821aにより分岐され、第1の半導体光増幅素子822a及び第2の半導体光増幅素子822bに入射された後、第1の半導体光増幅素子822aからの出力光は第2の多モード干渉(MMI)型カプラ若しくは方向性結合器821bを経由して、また第2の半導体光増幅素子822bの出力光は直接に、第3の多モード干渉(MMI)型カプラ若しくは方向性結合器821cに入射して、再び合波される。すなわち、マッハツェンダ干渉系が形成されている。この時、半導体光増幅素子822aの屈折率が入力信号光により変調されているため、干渉路間の位相差が変化する。入力信号光のビットがON,OFFの時、干渉路間の位相差がπの奇数倍若しくは偶数倍になるように設定することにより、波長がλCWに変換された波長変換光信号が波長変換回路706から出力される。一方、入力用光導波路705から入射した入力光信号は、波長変換回路706から出力されない。

また、上述の本発明の第2の実施形態では、波長変換回路として、半導体光増幅素子を用いた相互位相変調型(XPM)波長変換器と相互利得変調型(XGM)波長変換器とを例に取り説明したが、その他の波長変換方法による波長変換器であってもよい。その例を挙げると、半導体光増幅素子を用いた四光波混合、ファイバを用いた四光波混合、2次の非線形性を持つ物質(LiNbO3,KTiOPO4,BaB2O4,2−adamantylamino−5−nitropyridine, AlGaAs)の差周波発生、分極反転構造を持つLiNbO3の差周波発生などの波長変換方法がある。

【発明の効果】
以上説明したように、本発明によれば、光ゲート器を、波長可変光源の出力部に配置し、波長可変光源が不要光を出力している間、その光ゲート器により不要光を遮断するため、所望の波長の光のみを出力用光導波路から出力することができる。
