Description
【0001】

k=(所定領域中に形成された開口部13の面積)÷(所定領域の面積)
1−k(x)=a/x (a;比例定数)

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the light utilization efficiency is not high in any of the backlight devices, and further improvement in light utilization efficiency is desired for improving the display quality of the liquid crystal panel.
[0008]
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a display device that greatly improves the utilization efficiency of illumination light.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The backlight device according to the present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and in a display device having a display element, and a backlight device arranged to irradiate light to the display element,
Two prism sheets are disposed between the display element and the backlight device, and the prism ridge lines of the two prism sheets cross each other.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0012]
First, a configuration that is a premise of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG.
[0013]
FIG. 2 is a perspective view showing the structure of the display device on which the present invention is based. This display device includes a transmissive display element P, and an edge type backlight device B is disposed behind the display element P.
[0014]
The backlight device B has a

[0017]
On the other hand, a liquid crystal element is preferable as the display element P. Specifically, an STN or DSTN liquid crystal element using a nematic liquid crystal, an active matrix liquid crystal element using a thin film transistor or an MIM element, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal are used. The used ferroelectric liquid crystal element or antiferroelectric liquid crystal element is suitable.
[0018]
In a liquid crystal element using a chiral smectic liquid crystal, a phenomenon has been reported in which liquid crystal molecules move to change the thickness of a liquid crystal layer and the display surface appears to be colored yellow (US Pat. No. 5,381,256). If the spectral characteristics of the illumination light change and the illumination light itself takes on a yellow color, the yellow color may be more emphasized. Therefore, it is preferable that the backlight device B applied to the liquid crystal element using the chiral smectic liquid crystal has no change in spectral characteristics.
[0019]
On the other hand, the backlight device B may be provided with a prism sheet as necessary, so that the light emission direction is made closer to the surface normal direction. In this case, a configuration in which a plurality of prism sheets have a convex surface facing the display element P as shown in FIG. 9 or a configuration in which the convex surface is facing the reflection means 10 as shown in FIG. Is particularly preferred. Although the number of processing steps increases, the reflection surface of the reflection means 10 may be processed to reduce the number of light reflections as shown in FIG.
