Preheating of thermal oxidizer process stream
Background of the Invention
No. 08 / 700,07, filed on Aug. 20, 1996.
No. 7 is a continuation-in-part application. The application is incorporated by reference.
The present invention generally relates to a method for preheating a process stream used by a thermal oxidizer.
Related. In particular, it relates to a method for treating condensables in such a process stream.
Thermal oxidizers are sometimes needed to process gas streams containing condensable compounds.
Is done. For example, volatile organic compounds (VO) from paints or other equipment
Contaminant streams containing C) need to be cleaned (cleaned) before being discharged to the environment
possible. Such thermal oxidizers include regenerative thermal oxidizers, recovery thermal oxidizers,
There are a medium oxidation device and a regenerative catalytic oxidation device. All of these oxidizers are here
Is generally referred to as a "thermal oxidizer" and the principles of the present invention can be used with a variety of oxidizers
Shall be.
If the condensable compounds in the process stream form in process ducts or thermal oxidation units
If it can be collected as a liquid or solid, the oxidizer will become inefficient or malfunctioning and clog
Fire can occur. Also, if the compound is condensable, the resulting liquid or fine
Particles can be difficult pollutants. Therefore, the compound is generally in its gaseous state
Ashing is desirable. In the present invention, this condensation occurs when using a thermal oxidation device.
On how to prevent
Known thermal oxidizers use auxiliary heating (to prevent condensation of organic or inorganic compounds).
That is, a heating method that does not use the thermal oxidation device itself) is used.
I have. This is inefficient because heat from outside the system must be used
.
Instead, known prior art thermal oxidizers, for example, wash away condensate
Removing or trapping them. This is also desirable
No. It requires additional equipment and has to be handled similarly.
This is because it results in logistics waste distribution.
It would therefore be advantageous to provide a more reliable and efficient thermal oxidation device. same
Oxidizers do not simply rely on auxiliary heating and can generate additional waste streams.
Condensates of organic compounds are removed or reduced in an imperfect process stream.
Similarly, VOC condensation is prevented and intermittent high VOC / concentration processing flows are applied.
It would also be advantageous to provide a short-cut processing system. Currently available thermal oxidation equipment
In practice, bypass hardware is required when encountering such processing streams.
You. This translates into greater thermal energy loss and greater capital for exhaust sediment.
Cost (ie, larger and more expensive blowers, fans). Also,
Preliminary design for a bio-thermal oxidizer requires a higher concentration of VOCs to be processed.
Thermal damper and bypass duct crystallization for the high temperature control system used
Also, additional preheating hardware was required. Instead, the condensation minimization system
Intermittent high / VOC / concentration processing system that operates independently of the system
It is desirable to use
Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides these and other advantages, while at the same time providing the advantages of conventional thermal oxidation equipment.
Hold. The present invention also provides new advantages not found in currently available thermal oxidizers.
And overcome the shortcomings of such devices.
Clothes.
In general, the invention employs a thermal oxidizer utilizing an oxidizing chamber to provide one or more contaminants.
It is directed to a method of treating the above airflow. In a first preferred embodiment of the present invention,
The surrounding air is mixed with the heated air flow from the oxidation chamber to form an intermediate air flow.
I'm sorry. Before this intermediate air stream is sent into the heat exchanger section of the oxidizer
Mixed with the air stream to be treated. The resulting airflow is thereby
Heated to a temperature sufficient to substantially remove condensates of organic compounds therein.
One skilled in the art will recognize that this configuration requires intermittent high VO without additional hardware.
It will be appreciated that it provides a new way of treating C. concentration treatment streams. Main structure
Is to provide an intermittent high concentration of VOC by reducing the thermal efficiency of the oxidizer.
Can be This is otherwise normal or pre-selected for this configuration.
More ambient air and heated air to process the VOCs in the
Achieved by introducing from a chemical conversion room. Of the resulting increased process flow
At a flow rate (flow rate), a large amount of processing flow gas is moved, and the heat of the oxidizer is transferred from the oxidation chamber.
By limiting the amount of heated gas that flows directly to the exchange section,
The thermal efficiency of the part is reduced.
Therefore, as the combined process stream flows into the heat exchange section of the oxidizer,
The efficiency of the heat exchange portion of the oxidizer for heating the heat is reduced.
Of course, the intermittent high VOC concentration processing characteristics of this system
And can be used independently. Reduced heat exchangers in such alternative applications
The holding chamber gas is bypassed or removed from the exchanger bed (floor) to
Rerouted away.
One or more air streams containing contaminants using a thermal oxidizer that also utilizes an oxidation chamber
In a second preferred embodiment, directed to a method for treating
In heat exchange relationship with inlet air flow
A heat exchanger is provided. The heated outlet air stream from the thermal oxidizer passes through a heat exchanger.
Sent, thereby substantially eliminating condensates of organic or inorganic compounds therein
To heat the inlet air stream to a temperature sufficient to Heated entrance empty
The air stream is then passed to a thermal oxidizer for processing.
In a third preferred embodiment, the outlet gas from the thermal oxidizer is the incoming gas to be treated.
Used to heat This is because the hot outlet gas has a heat exchange relationship with the incoming process gas.
By designing the duct within the duct to flow through it in a state
Is In order to achieve this, it is desirable to use a coaxial heat exchanger. This one
In the method, the inlet air stream is heated to a sufficient temperature and any organic or non-
And condensates of the organic compounds are substantially eliminated.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The preferred implementation of the present invention with respect to its use with a regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO)
An embodiment will be described. RTO oxidizes pollutants such as hydrocarbon vapors in the air
Is known for doing. Conventional RTOs have a “dirty”
Gas is oxidized and burned (typically at temperatures above 815.6 ° C. (1500 ° F.)
(In degrees) for the combustion chamber. The oxidized gas is then directed out of the combustion chamber
And passed through a second regenerative heat exchanger for "cooling" (previously heated). Should be washed
The flow of cold gas is exchanged through a heat exchanger, and the washed hot gas is discharged from the combustion chamber into the cold
By moving through "rejected" heat exchangers, the RTO becomes contaminated.
Can be operated continuously to efficiently oxidize waste gas. An example of such an RTO is the United States
Nos. 5,026,277 and 5,352,115. See the patent
Incorporated by. However, the advantages of the present invention are that
It can also be applied to other oxidizers such as a regenerative catalytic oxidizer.
In the embodiments described in FIGS. 1 to 7, the thermal oxidation generally indicated by reference numeral 5 is used.
The device comprises a heat exchange section, a holding chamber 20 (also known as a combustion or oxidation chamber), an air flow.
And the related duct products. (For example, invitation
Either wind (ID) or forced draft can be used. )
Referring to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, in the first method of the present invention, the oxidation chamber of RT05 is used.
Utilize heated air from 20. This air comes into contact with the surrounding airflow AAS.
And the resulting heated air is then passed through fan 32 to the inlet
Introduced into the process stream (IPS) and present in the air stream before directing the IPS into the RTO
Heat it to a temperature sufficient to remove condensates of organic or inorganic compounds
So that
In another preferred embodiment of the invention, this configuration has intermittent high concentration VOCs.
It is designed to handle processing streams that Those skilled in the art have identified "intermittent high concentration VOC"
With a contaminant concentration that exceeds the point or range of the designed contaminant
It will be easily understood that this is a typical inlet process stream. Contaminants for specific designs
Certain points or ranges may vary depending on the needs of the user,
Preselected based on factors. Thermal oxidation equipment for intermittent high / VOC / concentration processing
It is desirable to reduce the thermal efficiency of the heat exchanger bed in the installation 5. This is the ambient air flow
And lower the control set point for fan 32 which draws holding chamber gas toward the inlet process stream.
Is achieved by Of course, optimization of such points for a particular thermal oxidizer is within the skill of the art.
Although achieved, the standard and low set point for fan 32 is
Varies with temperature. The resulting increased airflow to heat exchanger section 10 is
Reduce the thermal efficiency of Heated air supply and inlet process stream in heat exchanger section 10
Increased removal of heated gas from holding chamber 20 prior to mixing
The heat supply to the heat exchanger section 10 is reduced because the supply of heat energy to the heat exchanger 10 is reduced.
Efficiency is further reduced. The dual capacity of this configuration (ie, preheating and intermittent high V
The characteristic of OC / concentration processing is that the heated air flow mixed with ambient air
There is the further advantage that it is not mixed with the mouth exhaust gas. So the exhaust gas flow is
It is not hot or comparable in the prior art. Thus, invitation
The ventilated blower or fan 30 used for the outlet exhaust gas flow is
Temperature will not be as high as the required temperature rating. Large quantities of this preferred embodiment
FIG. 2 shows an example of the flow. This figure also shows the heat exchanger 10 of the regenerative thermal oxidizer 5
Discloses the use of a purge stream.
This "Heat Boost" and "Heat Bypass" binary configuration is plywood veneer dryer and similar
Effective use in different processing machines should be found.
In the second method of the present invention, referring to FIGS. 3 and 4, the oxidation chamber 20 of the RTO 5
The air passes through the indirect mixing heat exchanger 40. Heat exchanger 40 is the inlet process stream
Any organic matter that is placed in the passage of the IPS and is present in the air stream before directing it to the RTO
Alternatively, the IPS is heated to a temperature sufficient to substantially eliminate condensation of inorganic compounds. 4th
The figure shows a schematic of an example of a large flow of a regenerative thermal oxidation unit using the method of the present invention. This
3 also shows details of the purge flow path of this preferred embodiment.
In a third method of the present invention with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6, the outlet exhaust from RTO 5
Gas is used to heat the inlet process stream (IPS) for the RTO. this
Is achieved by using a duct in duct. As a result, the heat exchanger
A coaxial tube heat exchanger designated by reference numeral 45 in the figure is preferred. Thus IPS
Passes through the inlet duct 50 as shown by the arrow, and passes through the outlet duct 60 in the opposite direction.
The passing OEG process stream is cooled. Conversely, the IPS passing through the entrance duct 50 is OE
Heated indirectly by the G process stream. OEG air from the outlet duct 60
The stream is sent to the stack 80 by the fan 30. Before directing the airflow to the RTO
The IPS is heated again to substantially eliminate condensation of organic or inorganic compounds present in the air stream.
Remove. It will be appreciated that this method improves the overall thermal efficiency of the oxidizer.
U. An example of a mass flow using this configuration is shown in FIG.
A further variation of this third embodiment is shown in FIG. Here, the heat exchanger 10
The exiting stream heats the inlet process stream (IPS) in the duct-to-duct heat exchanger 45.
It is heated by the exhaust burner 90 before. In this variant, the inlet process stream is
As it passes through the duct heat exchanger 45, the added heat boost for the inlet process stream is
Added as an advantage. This further prevents the volatile organic compounds from condensing.

It may be largely changed by an error.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from its spirit or essence.
It will be understood that For example, the preheating feature of the present invention is a natural gas burner or
Is achieved by using an external heat source such as a steam coil. This preheating feature
Can also be used for catalytic oxidizers or other types of thermal oxidizers
