車椅子は走行速度で移動しているので、可動部4を作用
点として下部1Bが前方に倒れていく。同時に車輪荷重
も可動部4の作用点と共に前方に移動していく。よって
段差上部に位置する回転体3Bに、車輪荷重の大半が移
動することとなり、回転体3Bが走行を担う回転体とな
る。それによって車輪装置は、平地走行から段差上部で
の走行に切り替わり、車椅子は段差衝撃を受けずに段差
を上る事になる。回転体3Aが段差を上りきると、回転
体3Aに対する段差抵抗がなくなる為、バネ5Aによっ
て下部1Bが瞬時に平地走行時の位置に戻される。これ
によって車輪荷重は回転体3Aに移動し、車輪装置は平
地走行時の状態に戻る。なお、下部1Bと可動部4及び
弾力体(車輪形態維持用バネ)5Aは上記動作ができれ
ば、どのような構造でもどの位置でもよい。また、下部
1Bの先端に回転体3Cを設置、もしくは下部1Bの先
端に突出部7を設けると、段差走行時に近接する段差に
よって、下部1Bを跳ね上げる効果があり、連続した段
差を走行する際に、より順調な段差走行ができる。各回
転体の外側に回転体と一緒に回る輪8を巡らすと、回転
体3Aの段差抵抗をより少なくできて、極めてスムーズ
に段差走行ができる。以上、どの方法も方向自在輪と方
