Current limiting circuit breaker with PTC (positive temperature coefficient resistivity) element and arc extinguishing ability
Field of the invention
The present invention is intended to limit the arc resulting from the operation of a circuit breaker under short circuit conditions.
Mechanical means with a positive temperature coefficient resistivity (PTC) element in the circuit breaker;
Related to the use of mechanical elements.
Background of the Invention
Circuit breakers should be used in residential and industrial applications due to short circuits or ground faults.
It is widely used for power line current interruption under severe overcurrent conditions. Severe overage
One of the problems associated with the current interruption process during current conditions is arcing. Arc is
Occurs between the contacts of a circuit breaker used for current interruption, but is very critical for several reasons.
Undesirable. The arc degrades the contacts of the circuit breaker and creates gas pressure. Circuit block
To avoid arcing at the contacts when the breaker contacts are fully open,
A circuit breaker with a large distance between the contacts in the open position is required.
Prior art devices have made many attempts to limit arcing.
For heavy duty switchgear, the contacts may be in vacuum or SF6In the atmosphere of
Is also good. Both of these attempts are very expensive. Furthermore, SF6Is warm
Confirmed as a room effect gas.
Another attempt that has been used to limit the amount of arc is the main contact of a circuit breaker.
And the use of resistors connected in parallel. When this main contact opens, the current
The shunt resistance can still flow, which reduces the amount of arc at the main contact.
Effectively reduce. The current flowing through this resistor will mainly be in the absence of this resistor.
Less than the short-circuit current flowing through the contacts, another pair of contacts connected in series with this resistor
Opening is achieved with less arc than would occur if the shunt resistance were not present
be able to.
Outside of Tanaka, a tank in which a UHV circuit breaker with resistance fills the insulating gas

A circuit breaker is disclosed. Before this main contact is closed, the resistance contact is closed,
A mechanism is provided for opening the resistive contacts after the main contacts have been opened. This
Are rated to withstand high currents and temperatures during short-circuit conditions.
There must be.
Khalid has a current limiting contact with a current limiting circuit in series with the main contact of the circuit breaker.
Teaching a breaker. When this current limiting contact is opened, the high
The flow is shunted. This resistance is an iron wire with a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTC) resistivity
Resistance. The short-circuit current flowing through this resistor heats this resistor, thereby
And limits the increase of the short-circuit current.
Outside of Perkins, (V, Cr)TwoOThreeMetal transition
The PTC resistance to be used is described. At a transition temperature of 80 ° C., (V, Cr)TwoOThree
Increases to a value 100 times the value at 20 ° C.
. The prior art described above discloses overcurrent as an alternative to bimetallic pieces for overcurrent protection.
It discloses the use of PTC elements for protection. The switch is for this switch
Are connected to the PTC element which is shunted by the drive coil. During normal operation
Now, the current flows through this PTC resistor. During a short-circuit condition, the PTC resistance
The rapid heating increases the resistance value and voltage of the PTC resistor, and the current of this drive coil is

It is enough for tripping. Outside Hansson (Wo 91/12643), PTC

You. One of these current branches has the excitation coil of the switch and the other
The other branch has two PTC resistors. PTC resistance depends on overcurrent condition
, Thereby driving the exciting coil for this switch.

Several devices are disclosed.
One problem with PTC resistors is their durability. That is, these resistances

Still other tests used to reduce arcing in switchgear
Only the use of mechanical means to interrupt this arc is required. Berber (

Most of the above prior art is industrial. For residential use, the voltage and negative
