Background of the Invention To facilitate retail checkout and maintain inventory control, bar code symbols or other visual indicators are affixed to the surface of the article to provide scanner readable data. The data may be used to identify the item and its price and other features related to checkout and inventory. Typically, a scanner includes a light source that emits a light beam, such as a laser or a semiconductor device. The light beam is optically deformed by the lens to form a beam spot of a size suitable for use with the visual indicator being read. Preferably, the beam spot is approximately as large as the minimum width between the areas of different optical reflectivity of the visual indicia, for example between the bar and space of the bar code symbol. The light beam is directed by an optical element along an optical path to an article having a bar code symbol on its surface. The scanning element is also arranged in the optical path. The scanning element may sweep the beam spot across the symbol, follow a scan line passing across the symbol, and / or scan the field of view of the scanner. The scanner includes a photodetector that extends across the symbol and has a field of view slightly beyond the symbol. The photodetector detects a change in light intensity and generates an electrical signal indicative of the continuity between the symbol bars and spaces. These electrical signals are decoded into data such as information about the goods and their prices. The clerk uses either a hand-held scanner that reads the code symbols on the article one at a time, or passes multiple articles at a time over the countertop scanner. The clerk then places the item in a shopping bag or other suitable bulk container. Electronic article surveillance (EAS) systems use either reusable or disposable EAS tags to monitor articles to prevent shoplifting or unauthorized removal of articles from stores. Reusable EAS tags are typically removed from goods before the customer leaves the store. The disposable tag is generally attached to the wrapper by an adhesive or is located within the wrapper. These tags remain on the article and must be deactivated before being removed from the store by the customer. The deactivation device uses a coil that is excited to generate a magnetic field that is large enough to deactivate the EAS tag. The deactivated tag will not subsequently respond to the incident energy of the EAS system and will not trigger an alarm. In one form of the deactivation system, a checkout clerk passes items one at a time over a deactivation device that deactivates a tag, and then places the items in a shopping bag or other bulk container. . This system employs one coil placed horizontally within the housing. The clerk moves the tagged article across the horizontal top surface of the housing so that the tag is generally flush with the coil. Other deactivation systems utilize a housing having a cavity with three sets of two coils, each of which is positioned around the cavity in an x-axis plane, a y-axis plane, and a z-axis plane, respectively. One coil is located in a plane parallel to each side of the cavity, two coils are placed around the cavity, one of the two coils is near the top of the cavity and the other is near the bottom of the cavity It has been like that. The checkout clerk places the bag or other bulk container in the cavity and then places the tagged article into the bag. After all the items have been placed in the bag, or when the bag is full, the clerk energizes the coil to deactivate all EAS tags in the bag. The clerk then lifts the bag out of the cavity. This system provides for the deactivation of multiple tags at once and does not require a specific orientation of the tags. Many high-volume retailers find it desirable to facilitate and facilitate the checkout process, including scanning barcode data and deactivating EAS tags. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for capturing data from a sign on an article and deactivating an electronic surveillance tag on the article. The device comprises a housing, a scanner and a deactivating means. The housing defines a space in which a bag can be placed to package an article. The scanner is located proximate the upper portion of the housing so as to capture data from an indicator on the item when the item is placed in the bag. The deactivating means is located below the scanner to deactivate the electronic surveillance tag when the article is in the bag. In a preferred embodiment, the scanner includes a plurality of scanners located proximate an upper portion of the space, wherein a person placing the article in the bag captures data from the sign when the article is placed in the bag. The path is not limited to one path, and the deactivating means includes a plurality of deactivating coils surrounding at least a part of the space. Further, the present invention provides an apparatus for capturing data from an indicator on an article. The apparatus includes a housing that defines a space in which a bag can be placed to package an article, and a housing positioned proximate an upper portion of the housing and applied to the article when the article is placed in the bag. A scanner that captures data from the landmarks. In a preferred embodiment, the scanner includes a plurality of scanners located proximate an upper portion of the space, wherein a person placing the article in the bag captures data from the sign when the article is placed in the bag. The route is not limited to one. As used herein, the sign may be, for example, a barcode on a label affixed to the article or a barcode printed on the article itself, and the bag may be a shopping bag or other suitable It can be a bulk container. The housing is preferably a rigid walled structure, but other embodiments, such as a wire structure, may be employed. Thus, the present invention provides an improved point-of-sale (POS) system that increases the overall throughput of customer / retailer transactions, which is beneficial to retailers, checkout clerks and customers. . In a preferred embodiment, the system causes the checkout clerk to scan the barcode with minimal attention to barcode symbol orientation and deactivate the EAS tag without paying attention to the orientation of the EAS tag. Is possible. The packing and scanning of the article are performed in one operation, and when the clerk finishes packing the article in the bag, all the EAS tags attached to the article are deactivated at once. Other objects, advantages and applications of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention. Description Figure 1 drawing is a perspective view of a packaging station having a scanning and deactivation system according to one embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a partially cutaway perspective view showing one embodiment of the deactivation coil in the packaging station of FIG. FIG. 3 is a schematic block diagram of one embodiment of an automatic excitation system for the deactivation coil of FIG. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to FIG. 1, there is shown a packaging station 10 employing an improved checkout system according to one embodiment of the present invention. The packaging station 10 has three side walls 12, 14, 16 and a bottom 18 forming a space 20 in which a shopping bag 22 or other bulk container can be placed. A large number of plastic shopping bags can be placed on the bulk carrier 24 with their handles hanging over the bag racks 26 and 28, one bag at a time being withdrawn for use. The stack holder 24 and the bag racks 26 and 28 are mounted on the side wall 16. The shopping bag 22 is hung over the bulk holder 24 and bag racks 26 and 28 in the expanded position. The packaging station 10 can be located next to a checkout counter 48 where articles such as articles 50 and 52 are placed for checkout. Articles 50 and 52 are provided with bar code labels 54 and 56 containing information that can be used for price indication and inventory management. Articles 50 and 52 also have associated EAS tags 58 and 60 for use with EAS systems known in the art. Preferably, EAS tags 58 and 60 are magneto-acoustic EAS tags sold by the assignee of the present application under the trademark "ULTRA MAX", and such EAS tags are widely used for anti-theft purposes. An article 30 with a barcode label 31 and an EAS label 32 is shown positioned within a shopping bag 22 located within the space 20. Barcode scanners 62, 64 (in FIG. 1, not visible because of the perspective view) and 66 are located adjacent to the upper portions of side walls 12, 14, and 16, respectively. One type of barcode scanner suitable for use is the LS9100 scanner available from Symbol Technologies. An article purchased by a customer, such as an article 70 with a barcode label 72 and an EAS tag 74, is picked up by a clerk (indicated by hand 68) and placed into the shopping bag 22, where the barcode label is placed. The above information is captured by at least one of the barcode scanners 62, 64 and 66. Barcode scanners 62, 64 and 66 can be connected to cash registers and a central computer system as is known in the art. The placement of the scanners 62, 64 and 66 involves placing the item in the shopping bag 22 and scanning the data on the barcode label attached to the item in one operation (indicated by arrow 76). Is possible. It should be understood that other barcode scanner configurations can be used. FIG. 2 illustrates one embodiment of a deactivation coil arrangement for use with the packaging station 10. The deactivation coil 34 is located in the side wall 12 and the deactivation coil 36 is located in the side wall 14. Side walls 12 and 14 are parallel so that deactivation coils 34 and 36 lie in a parallel plane. The deactivation coil 38 has four coil sections 40, 42, 44 and 46. The coil section 40 is located in the bottom 18 near the forward portion of the bottom 18, and the coil section 42 is located in the side wall 16 near the top of the side wall 16. Coil sections 44 and 46 are located in sidewalls 12 and 14, respectively, along a diagonal of each of deactivation coils 34 and 36. The power supply shown in FIG. 3 is connected to the deactivation coils 34, 36 and 38, and supplies electrical energy that forms a magnetic field that deactivates all EAS tags in the shopping bag 22. 36 and 38. The power supply can excite the deactivating coils 34, 36 and 38 by means of a switch operated by hand or foot. Preferably, the deactivation coil is automatically energized as described below with reference to FIG. Further, it should be understood that other deactivation coil configurations can be utilized in the present invention. For example, a plurality of deactivation coils, such as those used in deactivation systems marketed by the assignee of the present invention under the trademark Rapid Pad, can be placed on the side and bottom of the packaging station 10. It should also be understood that the packaging station 10 can have alternative embodiments, such as four side walls, side walls meeting at an angle different than 90 degrees, two side walls, and the like. Referring to FIG. 3, one embodiment of an automatic deactivation system is disclosed. The bag rack 26 is a metal tube or other suitable structural member and is connected to a detection circuit 80, which detects the capacitance of the circuit when connected to the bag rack 26. The bag rack 26 is electrically insulated from the ground potential by being mechanically mounted on a side wall 16 formed of a non-conductive material, as shown in FIG. 1, for example. The detection circuit 80 detects when the clerk at the checkout clerk is in the process of removing the bag from the member 26, and detects a change in capacity caused by the clerk's hand touching the bag rack 26. This process involves not only actually removing the bag from the member, but also moving a human hand towards the bag and the member. The detection circuit 80 detects when the clerk's hand (indicated by reference numeral 78) is at a predetermined distance from the bag rack 26 or when the clerk is actually in contact with the bag rack 26. The detection circuit 80 is connected to a deactivation system 82 which includes a deactivation system controller 84, a deactivation power supply 86 and a deactivation coil 88 (a deactivation coil as shown in FIG. 2). 34, 36 and 38). When the detection circuit 80 detects that the hand 78 is within a predetermined distance from the bag rack 26, a signal is provided to the deactivation system controller 84. In response to this signal, the deactivation system controller 84 provides the necessary control signal to the power supply 86, which excites the deactivation coil 88 and is within the effective area of the deactivation coil 88. A magnetic field of sufficient strength to deactivate the EAS tag is generated. It will be understood that modifications and variations of the present invention can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. It is also understood that the objects of the present invention, when read in light of the above description, should not be construed as limited to the particular embodiments disclosed herein, but only by the appended claims. Let's do it.
