所定の文字数から成る第１の文字群と、前記第１の文字群のそれぞれの文字に関連すると共に所定の文字数から成る第２の文字群とを段階的に選択することによって所定の文字を入力する文字入力装置であって、

前記第２の文字群に含まれる文字を表示する第２の文字群表示手段と、
前記第１の文字群および前記第２の文字群に含まれる何れかの文字の指示と当該指示された文字の選択決定に用いられる操作手段と、
前記操作手段を所定の操作状態にすることによって当該操作手段によって指示された前記第１の文字群に含まれる文字を選択決定する第１選択決定手段と、
前記所定の操作状態を解除することによって前記操作手段によって指示された前記第２の文字群に含まれる文字を選択決定する第２選択決定手段とを備えた、文字入力装置。

前記第２の文字群は、前記第１の文字群とは異なる位置に表示されることを特徴とする、請求項１に記載の文字入力装置。

前記第２の文字群は、前記第１の文字群の上に重ねて表示されることを特徴とする、請求項１に記載の文字入力装置。

前記第２の文字群は、前記第１の文字群において選択された文字を中心としてその周辺に表示されることを特徴とする、請求項３に記載の文字入力装置。

文字群の種類を選択する文字群種類選択手段と、次に選択される文字群の種類を表示する文字群種類表示手段とをさらに備え、
