The crosslinking imparts many favorable physical and chemical properties to the epoxy resin and also limits the use of the epoxy resin to those where the brittle nature of the crosslinked resin is not a disadvantage. Many measures have been taken to impart flexibility to epoxy resins. The present invention provides a reactive external flexibility agent for epoxy resins and an epoxy resin incorporating the reactive external flexibility agent. Generally, there are three ways to provide flexibility to an epoxy resin system: a non-reactive external flexibility agent, a reactive external flexibility agent, and a chemical modification to the backbone of the epoxy resin. Is adopted. Non-reactive external flexibility agents for epoxy resin systems are often considered plasticizers, including natural and synthetic rubbers, such as styrene-butadiene, acrylonitrile-butadiene polymers, or dibutyl phthalate. Reactive external flexibility agents for epoxy resin systems include products such as DESMOCAP ™ marketed by BAYER AG. Such external flexibility imparting agents can be prepared from polyalkylene oxides linked to a common backbone, for example, trimetholpropane. A similar reactive external stabilizer is reported in DE 3202300. It describes a polyalkylene oxide component having a molecular weight of 500-3500. A cyclic carboxylic anhydride is added to the hydroxyl group of the polyalkylene oxide to generate a carboxyl group. The polyalkylene oxide component is derived from the addition reaction of an alkyl oxide, such as ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, to an active hydrogen compound, such as a mono- or polyalcohol. Efforts to impart flexibility to the crosslinked epoxy resin by chemical modification of the epoxy backbone (providing internal flexibility) generally involve the reaction of an aromatic epoxy resin with a fatty acid. Incorporating an aliphatic component into the resin is included. Another means of imparting internal flexibility to the epoxy resin is to incorporate the diglycidyl ether of a polyol described in EP 253 404. Each of the foregoing systems for imparting flexibility faces the problem of limited use. The foregoing methods provide flexibility and impact resistance to the cured epoxy resin system, while compromising the chemical attack and solvent resistance of the cured resin, increasing the coefficient of thermal expansion, Then, the heating deflection temperature is lowered. See Lee and Neville's Handbook of Epoxy Resins, McGraw Hill, New York, 1967, pp. 16-5. In contrast to the previous teachings, Applicants have shown that polyalkylene oxide blocks of molecular weight less than 500 provide good flexibility to epoxy resin systems and include surprising resistance to hydrocarbon solvents. It has been determined that it provides properties. The external reactive flexibility imparting agent of the present invention can be prepared starting from a polyalkylene oxide block having a molecular weight of less than 500. Examples of suitable starting materials are polyether polyols, such as the series marketed by The Dow Chemical Company under the trademark VO RANOL. Examples of trifunctional glycerin-based polypropylene glycols are VORANOL ™ CP3055 and VORANOL ™ CP255. The polyether polyol can be prepared by addition of an alkylene oxide to a polyalcohol, such as glycerin. The resulting polyoxyalkylene oxide is then advantageously reacted with a cyclic carboxylic anhydride to give the cyclic carboxylic acid half-ester. The present invention provides compounds of the formula I The compound of the above formula, wherein the following segment Has a molecular weight of less than 500, A is the residue of an alcohol having a hydroxyl functionality of 1 to 5, W is a divalent residue derived from a difunctional anhydride, and L is the elimination X is hydrogen, a branched or linear alkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or an alkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms substituted by halogen, a is 0-4 and b is 1-5, provided that n is 1-10 and a + b is 1-5. Component A can be derived from a monofunctional or polyfunctional alcohol. A may have from 1 to 30 carbon atoms and A is preferably derived from a polyalcohol or polyphenol. In addition to alcohol as a source of A, other candidate sources include compounds containing acidic hydrogen, such as a carboxyl or hydroxyl group or a CH group activated by an adjacent carbonyl group. Compound. Polyphenols such as the residues of bisphenol A, bisphenol F or phenol novolak are also suitable as component A in formula I. Monohydric to pentavalent aliphatic alcohols having 1 to 5 carbon atoms are preferred. Examples of such preferred alcohols are dihydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, propylene or butylene glycol, trihydric alcohols such as glycerol, 1,1,1-tris- (hydroxymethyl) -propane, 1,3 , 5-Tris- (2-hydroxyethyl) -isocyanuric acid, a tetrahydric alcohol such as pentaerythritol, or a pentahydric alcohol such as arabitol. X is hydrogen, a branched or linear alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms substituted by halogen. n is 1 to 10, preferably 2 to 4. In addition, the segment Are selected so that the molecular weight of the segment is less than 500. Divalent radical W is derived from the cyclic anhydride, for example C 2 -C 20 alkane - diyl or alkylene - diyl, C 4 -C 10 1,2-cycloalkylene or cycloalkene-1,2-ylene, C 6 -C 10 a cycloalkadiene-1,2-ylene, dicarboxylic acid cyclic anhydride or a chemical equivalent is derived for example from an acid halide. The cyclic ring may be substituted or unsubstituted with one or more C 1 -C 6 hydrocarbon residues. Alternatively, W is ortho-arylene derived from a 1,2-aromatic dicarboxylic anhydride. Preferred sources for component W include known anhydrides reactive with epoxy groups, as summarized by Lee and Neville at pages 12-3 to 12-7. Preferred anhydrides are the above alkyl, alkylene, and aromatic anhydrides, succinic anhydride, maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, dichloromaleic anhydride, dodecenyl succinic anhydride, glutaric anhydride. , Tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, 3,6-dimethyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride, methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride, methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride, pyromellitic dianhydride, cis-cyclopentanetetracarboxylic dianhydride , Hemi-mellitic anhydride, trimellitic anhydride, and naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic anhydride. Formula I provides a carboxylic acid group that can be utilized to react an oxirane ring of an epoxide with a carboxylic acid to form a second ester linkage from the anhydride. Using one of the many commercially available aliphatic or aromatic diepoxy functional compounds, utilizing a second oxirane ring to react with the external flexibility imparting compound in the epoxy resin system Can be. The flexible epoxy resin compound of the present invention has the following Formula II Formula II May be represented by Component B is typically derived from an epoxy resin having more than one epoxy group. B is the following formula IX-XII formula IX Formula X Expression XI Formula XII It may also be applicable to one, in the above formula, R 1 is separately in each occurrence, C 1-10 alkane - diyl, C 1-1 0 haloalkylene, C 4-10 cycloalkylene, carbonyl , Sulfonyl, sulfinyl, oxygen, sulfur, or a direct bond. R 1 is preferably C 1-3 alkylene, C 1-3 haloalkylene, carbonyl, sulfur, or a direct bond, more preferably a direct bond, isopropylidene, or fluorinated isopropylidene (—C (CF 3 )) 2- ), most preferably isopropylidene. R 2 is, independently at each occurrence, C 1-3 alkyl or halogen; R 2 is preferably methyl, bromo or chloro, most preferably methyl or bromo. R 3 is, independently at each occurrence , C 1-10 alkylene or C 5-10 cycloalkylene; R 3 is preferably C 1-3 alkylene or a compound of formula VIII Wherein a is, independently at each occurrence, 0-4, and m is, independently at each occurrence, 0-4. Preferably, m is 0-2. The variable m 1 is independently 0-3 in each occurrence. The variable n is as previously defined, ie, 1-10. The variable s is 0 to 8, more preferably 0 to 4. The variable r is 0 to 40. Preferably, r is 0-10, most preferably 0-5. The compounds indicated by the symbols a, b, m, m 1 , n, r and s are generally recognized as a mixture of compounds having a distribution of units to which they refer, so they may be average numbers. X is as previously defined. The described external reactive flexibility imparting agents, when combined with the polyepoxide, form a flexible epoxy resin system. Any amount of the flexibility-imparting agent may be added to the entire epoxy of the system to be provided with flexibility, or may be combined with a portion of the entire epoxy of the epoxy resin system to be provided with flexibility. . In the overall resin system, the portion described in Formula II containing the flexibility-imparting agent will constitute 5 to 70 parts per 100 parts by weight of the epoxy resin of the system. In general, the smaller the amount of the flexibility-imparting agent, the less the flexibility imparted that would be useful in its resin properties. It has been found that the incorporation of more than 75 parts of the flexibility-imparting agent into the resin system results in inadequate chemical resistance. Dicyandiamide and its derivatives, polycarboxylic anhydrides such as those described above, aromatic polyamines such as m-phenylenediamine or any of the known curing agents such as cycloaliphatic polyamines, the flexibility-imparting agent. The cured epoxy resin can be cured to form a cured useful resin. At room temperature, these epoxy resin systems can be cured with polyaminoamides, polyaminoimidazolines, aliphatic polyamines or polyether-polyamines. Useful curing agents are taught by Lee and Neville in chapters 7-12. The described epoxy resin systems, and their acrylated or methacrylated reaction products, are generally useful for purposes where epoxide resins are of utility. In particular, these epoxide resin systems are particularly useful when impact resistance is required, such as in fiber reinforced composite articles, for example, boats, body parts of creation vehicles, car body parts, helmets and sports racquets. It is. The described flexible epoxy resins also find use as coatings in which the substrate is subjected to flexing. The following examples are illustrative of the epoxy resin system and the present invention. Examples 1 to 4 The above polyalkylene oxide half-ester flexibility imparting agent can be prepared according to the following procedure. Measurements are in parts by weight unless otherwise stated. The polypropylene glycol prepared from the reaction of propylene oxide with glycerin to form the indicated amount of trifunctional polypropylene glycol was introduced into a suitably sized reactor. The indicated amount of the specified dicarboxylic anhydride was added to the reactor. The gas volume of the reactor was purged with nitrogen gas. The reaction mixture was heated to 130-140 ° C. with stirring for 2-3 hours. At time intervals, the reaction mixture was tested and the acid number of the reaction mixture was determined. When the acid number approached the theoretical acid number calculated for the expected reaction product, the reactor was cooled. For this purpose, the acid number was defined as mg of KOH required to neutralize the resin per gram of resin in a simple titration using phenolphthalein as a color indicator. It was convenient to use KOH as an aqueous solution of 100 mol / m 3 (0.1N). An aliquot of the resin was dissolved in a solvent, such as acetone. Table I Examples 5-11 The flexible epoxy resin system of the present invention incorporating the polypropylene oxide component prepared according to Examples 1-4 can be prepared as follows. An appropriately sized reactor was charged with a measured amount of polyepoxide. To the reactor was added a measured amount of a polyalkylene oxide flexibility agent. Sufficient known catalyst was added to catalyze the reaction of the epoxide groups of the polyepoxide with the carboxylic acid groups of the polyalkylene oxide-anhydride adduct. Generally, 0.3 weight percent of tetramethylammonium chloride was preferred. In these examples, ethyl-triphenylphosphonium acetate was used. At a temperature of 120 ° C to 125 ° C, the polyacid was reacted with the epoxy resin for 1.5 to 2 hours. The epoxidized flexibility agent was incorporated into the epoxy resin system by blending at room temperature according to the ratios in Table II. As a curing agent for the resins of Examples 5 to 11, a reaction product of isophoronediamine and a liquid epoxy resin was used. The reaction product was 10.7 parts of a 50:50 blend of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F having an amine hydrogen equivalent weight [AHEW] of 96, 36.6 parts of benzyl alcohol, 35.6 parts of isophorone diamine, m -9.0 parts of xylene diamine, 5.4 parts of salicylic acid and 2.7 parts of nonylphenol. After curing at room temperature for 7 days, the samples were tested for chemical resistance by immersion in the indicated solvent / acid for 7 days at room temperature. Mechanical properties were measured according to ASTM D-638M. Table II * Cracked From the foregoing examples, it is clear that epoxy resin compositions having a polyalkylene oxide segment of molecular weight less than 500 provide comparable flexibility to epoxy resin compositions having molecular weights greater than 500. . Moreover, epoxy resin compositions having segments of polyalkylene oxides of molecular weight less than 500 (Examples 9, 10, and 11) exhibit excellent resistance to organic solvents without sacrificing acid resistance or mechanical properties. provide.
