Tubular sealing articles
The present invention provides, for example, an environmental seal and / or an electrical seal as described below.
The present invention relates to a tubular sealing article useful for a gasket for an automobile.
The present invention relates to an elongated gel sealant body, a solid, porous or tubular elongated key.
Article comprising a carrier and an elongated tubular casing, wherein the article comprises:
The casing has a gap, (a) the casing surrounds the gel on the carrier,
If the product is compressed, it can protrude through the gap in the casing, and if the compression is removed
The gel is selected so that the projections can be retracted; or (b) the casing
Is on the carrier and the gel body at least partially surrounds the casing on the carrier
Can be deformed to expose the enclosed part of the casing when the article is compressed.
If compression is removed, select so that it can recover to re-enclose the exposed area.
Has been selected.
Articles according to the present invention are convenient to handle in the desired orientation and the gel is
Contact all surfaces when not compressed to have protrusions through
Is substantially "dry". Such articles are in all respects (Chu
Tubing the gel from contamination) even at the end of the casing
The casing is protected by the method described in WO-A-9416844 (MP1469).
Of a flat gel sheet in a "sandwich" structure between two open-cell layers
It has the further advantage of eliminating exposed edges that can be exposed.
The casing may be, for example, an open-celled polymer foam, e.g.
Formed from a hollow tube formed in
When the tube is stretched to accept the fluid body and the tension is released, the tube is
Shrinks around the gel sealant body. However, preferred for the purposes of the present invention
The casing is formed from a cloth.
Preferred articles according to the present invention are those wherein the casing is a tubular cloth, preferably a woven cloth.
, A blade or a knitted fabric. Non-woven fabric can be used if desired
However, it is generally preferred to use woven, braided or knitted tubular fabrics
The gap
The dimensions between them are more easily controlled. Preferred articles according to the present invention include
The braided cloth casing is placed on site, preferably in tubular weaving, braiding or
Or knitting that forms around an elongated gel body.
You. Fabric forming yarns or filaments tend to cut relatively soft gel material
And / or the gel is very flexible and flexible in the fabric forming operation.
The carrier supports the gel, contrary to the usual expectation that it cannot be properly controlled.
The fabric is acceptable around elongated gel bodies, in conditions that exist to control elongation
It has been found in the present invention that it is formed as follows. The carrier is actually gas
Substantially "moving" the article so that it is shaped and held as required for use as a ket.
Not "substantially elastic to give a bend, but sufficiently flexible
Is preferred.
Apparatus, methods and paradigms suitable for weaving, braiding or knitting operations
The meter should take into account the need to avoid gel damage or unacceptable deformation
It may be determined by one skilled in the art. For example, known designs that can extrude gels here
A small-diameter (37.5 mm) flat knitting machine moves horizontally along the flow from the extruder
It may be attached to. Then, a simple single jersey flat weft tube,
May form as the gel is extruded around an elongated gel profile as described below
. Knitting is the preferred method. Because the opening fabric structure is relatively hard
Easy from polymer monofilament or single or multi-strand wire
Apparatus formed and relatively stable and suitable are, for example, flat knitted Keplar (Kevlar) (
Already marketed as a fabric at a rubber extrusion company for reinforced automotive hoses
Because it is.
Further, the elongated gel body is inserted into a pre-existing cloth casing or its
May be formed therein. In this embodiment, having or having the above carrier
Some gel extruded profiles having a desired cross-sectional shape without a carrier are preferred.
After some expansion of the casing, e.g. by longitudinal compression of the blades.
It can be inserted into existing tubular fabric casings. Gel profiles
Extruded directly into a pre-existing casing, with or without a carrier
Or molded.
Preferred fabric casings are, for example, suitable cross-sectional shapes (do not exclude tape)
Flexible filaments, spun yarns, mono- and multi-filament yarns
, They are polymeric materials, preferably the extenders used for the preferred gels
May be selected from those which are relatively impermeable to the fluid. For example, high density polyethylene
Fabrics consisting of or containing filaments of filaments are advantageous; other materials, such as
Medium density polyethylene, polyester, polyamide or polypropylene are also useful
It is. For many purposes, cloth casings are made of virtually all polymer fillers.
It is preferable to include a certain amount of glass,
Fibers or other filaments may be included for specific purposes. Wear
Or other mechanical damage resistant filaments are tough and durable
Useful when supplying certain gaskets.
In one preferred form of the article of the present invention, the cloth casing is made of a conductive filament.
Fiber, preferably a metal filament or a metal-coated polymer filament (eg,
For example, silver-coated or nickel-coated polyamide filaments, for example, silver metal 18
Weight percent), or metal and polymer fibers
A hybrid yarn. Some, preferably all, conductive (preferably
Or metal) filaments are particularly useful as EMI shielding gaskets.
A conductive article, where the conductive filaments provide the desired barrier effect,
Under pressure to provide an environmental seal, the gel protrudes through gaps in the metal fiber
. Suitable alloys of metals such as nickel, copper, beryllium or aluminum are already
It is well known that a suitable alloy of beryllium and copper is
Specialty to provide high resilience EMI gaskets when
Preferred. Monel alloys of other metals, such as nickel and copper, tinplated
Phosphor bronze or Ferex (registered trademark of Chomerics) tinplated copper-plated steel
Gels that may also be useful and reduce interaction with corrosive environments such as salt spray
May have advantages from the protective presence of
The casing and the entire article should provide useful placement flexibility in use.
It is preferably flexible, but the tubular fabric can be properly compressed in the lateral direction and the cloth
Relatively or substantially longitudinal, provided that the desired protrusions of the gel pass through
Articles that are rigid in direction may be useful for certain purposes.
Whether the gel or casing forms the outermost part of the article,
The elongated gel body may have any desired cross-sectional shape. In the case of the cloth casing of the present invention,
Gas-containing, preferably hollow tubular, carrier-containing, gel-form suitable for

FIG. 3 is a schematic view of a hollow tubular gel profile 30 which is knitted.
Hollow tube of ethylene / vinyl acetate with metal filament casing 32
It has a tube-shaped internal carrier 31.
FIG. 4 shows a ring between two parts 42 and 43 of an electrical isolation housing for electrical equipment.
Metal cloth case indicated by cross, which can act as environmental and EMI sealing cloth
A substantially round gel profile 40 surrounded by a ring 41 is shown on the left, with the same arrangement
It is shown in a closed configuration to the right of FIG. The gel 40 closes the gap between the metal cloth casings 41.
Compressed to project through and provide the desired environmental seal to the housings 42,43.
Forming a stop, and there is also an electrical contact between the part and the metal cloth casing 41.
Examples of materials, equipment and operating conditions for forming the articles of the present invention are as follows:
:
Example 1
37.5mm diameter Harry Lucas Textilmaschinen Model RHU knitting
A multifilament low-pressure machine of the type described in PCT / GB97 / 00775
Moisture content of FINA A360B extender oil on synthetic polymer carrier
12% styrene-ethylene / propylene-styrene triblock copolymer
It was installed along the flow of an extruder that produces an extrudate of a known gel. Extrudate, Nitty
Having a diameter sufficient to substantially fill the fabric tube knitted by the
. Then, using a 5 gauge machine (5 needles per 25.4 mm), a single jar
G flat weft knitted tubing is gradually knitted around the solid extrudate for 600 minutes per minute.
Using a machine at a speed of rotation of 0.35 mm diameter at 10 steps per 25.4 mm
Knitted polyurethane terephthalate monofilament. Fira while weaving
To avoid unacceptable cutting of the gel by
The tension was kept low at about 0.3N per tex (tex was a fiber strand
ISO standard at the linear density of the metal, calculated as g weight per 1000 m length
Was done).
Example 2
Of the gel on the tubular carrier described in WO-A-9609483, supra.
The pre-existing hollow tube was cut in 8 steps per 25.4 mm on the same machine as in Example 1.
The resulting five 38AWG tinned copper wires were enclosed in a braided cloth tube
. The resulting fabric had about 50% optical coverage. Wire does not cut gel
To accommodate lower tensions, the machine operates at a slower speed of 300 rpm.
Work
Moved.
Example 3
48-spool, vertical track play
G, instead of a horizontal blade machine, a 2-fold 9 with 3 ends per spool
4 Tex Nylon 6,6 multifilament yarn is applied at about 0.5N per tex.
The gel was bladed around the gel extrudate as in Example 1 using tension. Loose
In the unified state, the resulting blade had about 70% optical coverage.
Example 4
An annular weaving machine of the type used for manufacturing fire hoses is the same as in Example 1.
Was used to weave a cloth tube around the vertical feed gel profile.
Example 5
The weft insertion loom is set up in a known manner, with a warp yarn of 24 ends per 25.4 mm.
4 fold 110Tex polyethylene terephthalate at end and 25 with weft
. 3 fold 110Tex polyethylene te with 18 picks (insertion) per 4mm
50 mm with knitted edge closure and fixed yarn using phthalate
Was manufactured. Warp yarn tension is about 0.8N per tex.
The weft thread tension when removing the insertion needle was about 0.25 N per tex.
. A gel profile having a suitable diameter as in Example 1 is inserted into the cloth tube.
(Or extruded or molded instead). Cloth tube should be around 8 gels
It had an optical coverage of 5%.
Example 6
A tubular carrier similar to the tubular carrier carrying the gel of Example 2 was used.
First, using a known braiding method and apparatus,
The gel layer by the method described in WO-A-9609483 described above.
Applied above to produce an article according to aspect (b) of the present invention.
