(Detailed description of preferred embodiment)
In FIG. 1, a computer 12, a scanner 14, and a storage for storing on a CD-ROM are shown.
A CD recording device 16 is shown. Printed as described in detail below.
The scanned map is scanned by the scanner 14 and converted into a digital electronic map image.
A printed map is a physical map that is physically drawn on paper or other medium that is recognizable by humans.
Map on a computer display screen or computer
This is to be compared with a map image existing in Molly. Next, these map images
Is converted to a unique, fixed format using software running on the computer 12.
To edit Next, the edited image is transferred to a CD-ROM (read-only

Read by the drive so that the image can be easily read.
The devices described above are general. The scanner 14 displays the printed map.
Can be stored in a computer readable file on a medium such as a disc or tape
What type of scanning device can be used as long as it can be converted to an electronic image
You may. In the preferred embodiment, the scanning surface is large.
Use a drum scanner. The computer 12 is a personal computer,
Workstation or other device that can edit the images contained in the electronic file.
You may. In the preferred embodiment, computer 12 is a hard disk drive.
It is a personal computer with an eve and a tape drive. Computer

4 illustrates the steps of a method for converting to a map image. Main steps
The steps are shown in the flow chart of FIG. 3 and the more detailed steps are shown in FIGS. 4-6.
Including the main steps performed.
According to FIG. 3, the first step in the method of the present invention is to convert the printed map
To a bitmap map image that can be edited on a computer or equivalent device.
(40). As is known in the art, a bitmap image has one or more pixels.
It is a raster image represented by several bits, for example 8 bits per pixel. next,
The map image is edited into a certain format using a computer (42). Finally,
The edited map image is stored on a CD-ROM, for example, so that the computer or equivalent
It is possible to read the data quickly with the device (44).
FIG. 4 shows details of the conversion step 40. The printed map is significantly larger
Must be cut or otherwise divided into sections suitable for the scanner 14.
Not (46). For example, FIG. 2A shows a printed map of the United States. Suitable for scanner
To do so, it is common to use, for example, the latitude and longitude lines described on many maps.
Cut the printed map along such reference lines. FIG. 2B shows latitude line 47 and longitude.
This indicates that a portion including the line 49 is cut. Other reference lines often appear on city maps
It may include character lines and numeral lines used. The cutting part is the whole map
Is large enough to minimize the effort required to cut and scan
It is desirable.
Then scan the cut sections of the map and convert them to digital images (48).
Any scanner that can scan images works similarly. However
In the preferred embodiment, the domain is scanned because large portions of the map can be scanned.
A ram scanner is used. Alternatively, images can be stored for storage in digital form.
Digital maps of printed maps, such as digital video cameras that capture images
Other devices that can be converted into the data may be used.
Next, digital map images are shown showing their contents, for example, the name of the map.
It is stored on the tape together with the normal identifier and the extent of the map (50).
FIG. 5 includes the step of editing the digital map image into a fixed format image.
Here are the steps in detail. Map images, either from a scanner or from another source
Load bitmap map image files to computer 12, even if they are files
Then, the image is edited using image editing software (60). FIG. 2B shows such a map image
Here is an example. Import bitmap map image using image editing software,
For example, a map image corresponding to a desired geographical range, such as a range of 1 degree latitude x 1 degree longitude,
Select (62). This range is the range that captures all map images of the selected map type
It is desirable that FIG. 2C shows the captured image.
In the captured map image, the latitude line 47 is curved upward and the longitude line 49 is inside.
, The reference mesh line (in the map of FIGS. 2A-D, the latitude line
It is evident that the range between the first and second longitude lines is not rectangular. This irregular shape
Raises two issues. First, the actual size of the 1 × 1 degree map image changes
It is to be. Images with coordinates near the equator are larger than images with coordinates near the poles.
Good. Therefore, the pixel relationship between the location on the image and the location on the map is
Therefore, it is difficult to locate one point on the map image. An example
For example, one map image is 600 pixels wide and the other map image is 400 pixels wide.
If it is a cell, the 200th pixel of the reference line is the respective map image
Will represent different map locations. Second, the shape of the map image is, for example, rectangular,
Do not have regular shapes such as triangles that match each other seamlessly.
And These regular shapes are sometimes called grids. irregular
Once the shape has been split and stored as a bitmap, it is
I can't join them. Image editing to overcome these difficulties
Edit the image using software. However, before starting the editing process
It may be necessary to rotate the image in the proper direction (64,66). This is the beginning
If the bitmap map image is in the wrong direction when scanned
You need it.
Orient the image in the appropriate direction and then use image editing software to format it
Edit it (68). For example, in the Adobe Photoshop (TM) program,
The image is processed using the tilt and bend functions from among the various functions. However,
Depending on the size of the captured image, the image may be first divided into four parts for easy editing.
This division may be performed again with the capture tool.
To make the image rectangular along the latitude and longitude lines (or other reference mesh lines)
A bitmap map image is captured so as to include these lines. Of the border of the captured image
The corners can be selectively used here to make the geographic area rectangular using the editing tools.
It has a "handle" that can be moved. To make the curved latitude line 47 straight,
For example, select the handle at one end of the line and move until the line is straight. As well
Then, move one end of the longitude line 49 so that the line is orthogonal to the straight latitude line 47.
To If necessary, the selected map containing the geographical area now rectangular
The image is further captured and the image area is matched to the geographic area. This capture step
Required if the first capture is larger than the geographic area. Next,
Is performed on the adjacent quadrant image to convert the image to a desired fixed format image.
To be reconfigured.
Next, the size of the selected map image is set to include the predetermined pixel range.
Is corrected (70). Use the Image Size command to perform this step
Can be The preferred pixel range is 720 pixels wide and 900 pixels high.
Is a rectangle of
If the color mode of the edited image is CMYK, then change the mode to CMYK
To RGB and map image can be displayed on computer display
Yes (72). CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) are color images
A subtractive color used to print an image. Use these color inks on one page
When combined, each absorbs the light spectrum, so add four colors
Then it turns black. On the other hand, RGB (red, green and blue) is additive. Addition
The colors combine to produce white light. Additives include lighting, video, and film recording
Used in coder and display monitors. These map images are first displayed
Their color mode to be seen on the ray screen
Is desirably converted from CMYK to RGB. Of course, this conversion is
Is only needed if is not initially in RGB mode.
Sometimes the map image is not well focused and sharpened for clarity
May need to be done. If necessary, add this to your image editing software.
By using a sharpening tool to increase the contrast between pixels in the image
It can be performed (74).
The final step in the formatting process is the same for all selected map images.
Is to convert the same color to a color in the color palette common to all images.
(76). By using the same color palette, all features of the same type
Maps have the same color. Therefore, “movement” that spans multiple map images is
Looks seamless. In this embodiment, the common color palette is the default
Let.
After image editing is complete, the image is stored for later reference. Figure 6 shows image storage
Are shown. For example, the intersection of the latitude and longitude lines of the west and north map boundaries
A reference point of the pixel range is determined (80). This reference point is
It can be said that it is a indicator. Further, the geographical range of the map image is determined, for example, 1 degree x 1 degree.
(82). The map image is then stored along with the reference point identifier and geographic area size.
(84). In a preferred embodiment, the identifier is a computer readable image containing image.
File name, for example, W121_46. W is the size of the geographic area
And the numbers indicate reference points. Of course, the identifier is, for example, a lookup table
Used to determine the geographical extent of the map, basically like an index into
Any character string can be used. Of course, an image and its image
As long as it reflects the reference point for the geographic area represented by the image,
Naming conventions can be used. All map images have the same pixel range
Therefore, the position in the map image can be accurately determined from this information.
The next process is a simple process of translating a geographic location into pixel coordinates.
This process is repeated to convert one or more printed maps to multiple digital maps.
Convert to image. In a preferred embodiment, the edited map image is
It is stored in a network storage device together with the directory. Images from there, CD-ROM
Transfer to a hard disk drive coupled to device 16. Device 16
Read the image and file directory from the drive and compact it
Write on disk. As a result, the disc contains many map images in a certain format.
All of them individually for display and printing.
And it can read correctly.
In some circumstances, the desired map image partially appears on a separately printed map.
Additional editing is required when For example, as shown in FIG.
The cuts may overlap on the other side of the map. Each of those parts is first
Scan as a map image. Next, the part of the desired map image is bitmap
Import individually from map images. Next, combine the two captured parts into one map image
This is then edited in the manner described above.
The principle of the present invention has been illustrated and described based on a preferred embodiment.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in details and details without departing from the above principles.
It was clear. For example, use a different reference point than the latitude and longitude lines
Can be. In some environments, bitmap map images are already
If available, the method of the present invention comprises providing a bitmap map image.
You can get started.
In view of the many possible embodiments to which the principles of the present invention can be applied, the implementation described above is
The examples are merely preferred embodiments of the present invention and limit the scope of the present invention.
It should be recognized that there is no. Rather, the invention is determined by the claims.
You. Therefore, the present invention is intended to be construed as including all such features that fall within the scope and spirit of these claims.
A claim is made for such an embodiment.
