Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve mechanical strength of a shield member without increasing plate thickness by forming a fit-inserting hole at a substantially central portion of a front surface of a housing, forming an insert tongue piece in a shield member at a position facing the fit-inserting hole, fit-inserting the insert tongue piece into the fit-inserting hole when mounting the shield member to the housing, and engaging the housing with the shield member. SOLUTION: An electric connector 20 fastens the upper and lower parts of the central part of the front surface 3a of a housing with the upper and lower parts of the central part of a metallic shield member 4 at positions facing the upper and lower parts of the central part of the front surface 3a via connecting means comprising fit-inserting holes 21. An insert tongue piece 22 with tip bent in a substantially L-shape is integrally formed with the metallic shield member 4 at positions facing the fit-inserting hole 21. When the metallic shield member 4 having the insert tongue piece 22 is fit-inserted into the housing having the fit-inserting hole 21, the insert tongue piece 22 is fit-attached with the inside of the fit-inserting hole 21 facing it, therefore, the metallic shield member 4 and the housing are strongly locked with each other in a front central portion to increase mechanical strength.

After the insertion tongue piece 22 is fitted into the facing insertion hole 21 in this way, as shown in FIG. 2, the male contact 2 is inserted into a female contact formed on a board or cable (not shown). A metal shield member (not shown) on the female contact side is inserted into the metal shield member 4 of the electrical connector 1 for insertion, and at this time, the metal shield member 4 is moved upward and downward as indicated by arrows. Even when the force F is applied, the metal shield member 4 is firmly engaged with the housing 3 by the fitting tongue piece 22 fitted in the fitting hole 21 to increase its mechanical strength. The central part of the shield member 4 is prevented from being deformed by the force F as much as possible.
Instability of the contact with the shield member 4 is prevented as much as possible, and stable electrical contact is maintained.

In the above embodiment, the insertion tongue 22 and the insertion hole 21 described above are formed in the housing 3 and the metal shield member 4 of the electrical connector 20 having the male contact 2. Without being limited to the above-described embodiment, the above-described insertion tongue piece 22 and the insertion hole 21 may be formed in the housing of the electrical connector having the female contact and the metal shield member.

As described above, according to the electrical connector of the present invention, the insertion hole is formed in the front of the housing, and the insertion tongue piece is formed in the shield member at a position facing the insertion hole. When the member is mounted on the housing, the insertion tongue of the shield member is inserted into the insertion hole of the housing to engage with each other, thereby improving the mechanical strength of the shield member. When the contacts are connected, deformation of the shield member due to the force acting from the inside of the shield member can be prevented as much as possible, so that stable electrical contact between the shield members is maintained and electromagnetic interference is prevented. It is possible to provide an electrical connector which is hard to receive.

Further, since the insertion tongue is formed to have a substantially L-shaped cross section, it is not necessary to make the outer shape of the housing larger than the outer shape of the shield member when the insertion tongue is inserted into the insertion hole. An electrical connector having a reduced height can be provided without increasing the vertical width of the housing and the shield member.
