The invention relates to a process for the production of pure phase zeolite ZSM-5 in a good yield using high silica raw kaolinite as a source of silicon and aluminum. The process comprises heat treatment of raw kaolinite to convert to metakaolinite followed by acid/base treatment of metakaolinite. The process involves dissolution of the silica and alumina components of metakaolinite and the removal of the solid residue that does not react with either the acid or the base used. The pH of the alkaline aluminosilicate solution was adjusted from 9 to 13, and the hydrogel formed was crystallized hydrothermally in an autoclave at a temperature from 100 to 180 degree C. The process allows the production of pure phase zeolite ZSM-5 with variable SiO<sub>2</sub>-to-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> ratios.
