A catalyst for hydroprocessing which comprises a carrier having supported thereon 5 to 20% by weight of at least one group VIb metal of the periodic table, 1 to 10% by weight of at least one group VIII metal of the periodic table, and 0.1 to 8% by weight of phosphorus, each based on the total weight of the catalyst, wherein the carrier comprises alumina and 1 to 8% by weight, based on the weight of the carrier, of zeolite having a unit lattice constant of 24.35 to 24.40 A or 1 to 8% by weight, in terms of silica based on the weight of the carrier, of silica—alumina having a silica content of not less than 30% by weight based on the silica-alumina. The catalyst exhibits high hydroprocessing performance and yet, when used in hydroprocessing a gas oil fraction, does not cause a great reduction in yield of desulfurized gas oil.
