RECUPERO DI METALLI E A CIDI DA SOLUZIONI ESA USTE DI DECAPA GGIO E/ODA FANGHI DI NEUTRALIZZAZIONE. RECOVERY OF METALS AND CIDES FROM ESA USTE SOLUTIONS OF PICKLING GGIO AND / OR NEUTRALIZATION SLUDGE.
Stato dell’arte State of the art
Pickling plays a fundamental role in the treatment of stainless steel. During this process, with the help of special solutions, mainly highly acidic and oxidizing, the surface oxides and the decromized layer coming from previous processing (thermal or mechanical) are removed. During the pickling phase, the pickling solution is enriched in iron and then, depending on the alloy elements, in nickel, chromium and, in considerably lower quantities, in other metals, such as copper, molybdenum, manganese, etc.
When the bath is too rich in dissolved metals it loses its effectiveness, it is therefore necessary to drain part of the tub and restore the correct conditions of use.
The discharged fraction of the bath must be subjected to treatment aimed at its recovery or disposal.
The classic treatments aimed at recovery concern the recovery of free acids only with the use of known techniques such as diffusion dialysis and acid retardation.
These are well-established techniques that are now in use in at least 50% of large pickling plants.
The classic treatment aimed at disposal, on the other hand, consists in the neutralization, with soda or lime milk, followed by the separation of the hydroxides, and possibly the calcium salts of the anions of the corresponding acids, such as sludge.
This treatment, which is very simple in itself, presents numerous management problems mainly related to the difficulty of abatement of fluorides in wastewater and to the cost of disposing of high volumes of hazardous sludge (classified R40, possibility of carcinogenic effects, having contained in Nickel above 10000mg / kg).
The presence in the sludge of high concentrations of heavy metals such as chromium and nickel make them not reusable in the brick industry.
The cost and problems associated with the disposal of sludge, together with the increasingly high price of elements such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum, which are currently being lost, have promoted the development of metal recovery processes.
The use of an electrodeposition cell is described in the following patents and articles: U.S. Patent Patent 4,731,166 to Jones, describes a chromium deposition process.
Electrochem., 29 (1999) 805 - / 812, describes a process of recovery and separation of nickel and chromium starting from exhausted industrial pickling baths by electrodeposition.
The industriousness and complexity of these processes limit their use in the industrial field. Alternative techniques for the treatment of exhausted baths are described in the following patents:

The patents VA / 2006 / A / 0042 filed on 06/07/2006 at the Patent Office of the Chamber of Commerce of Varese by Condoroil Chemical S.r.L and DE4435232 filed on 11 April 1996 by the German company Hahnewold Gmbh describe a process of recovery of acids and metals from pickling baths for stainless steels using electrodialysis processes. The limitation of these processes derives from the high plant and management costs associated with the deposition of all dissolved metals, including iron.
Similarly, the patent EP046371 filed on November 30, 1995 by the German Metallgesellschaft which provides for a cascade treatment with diffusion dialysis, metal electrolysis and evaporation has not found industrial application due to the high cost attributable to the electrodeposition of iron.
II brevetto U.S. U.S. Patent Patent 4,565,675 by Uchino et al describes a solvent extraction process which allows, under suitable conditions, to obtain metals as oxides of a certain commercial value. Given the dangerousness of the solvent, this process has not found industrial diffusion.
I brevetti U.S. U.S. patents Patent 6,451,269 and 6,159,382 both of Conant and others describe cryogenic systems to cryogenic metals as salts and recover free acid, in this case, however, the resulting salts, even more so being dirty with acid, do not find an application aimed at their recovery.
II brevetto U.S. U.S. Patent Patent 4,526,650 of Blomquist et al. Describes a pyrolytic process for the recovery of hydrofluoric-nitric baths.
Pyrolytic systems allow, in addition to the recovery of acids, to recover the metals in the form of oxides, which in particular conditions can be reintroduced into the melting furnaces. U.S. Patent Lebl's patent 5,980,850 describes a pyrolytic system for the recovery of hydrofluoric, hydrochloric, nitric acids and their previously concentrated mixtures by exploiting the heat of the exhaust gases of pyrolysis.
U.S. Pat. Patent 6,375,915 by Barhold et al. Describes the coupling of a diffusion dialysis and a pyrolytic system for the recovery of acids and metal oxides from a nitric / hydrofluoric bath.
The patent W02004007801 filed on February 12, 2004 by KLEIN KLAUS provides for a first evaporation stage in which the metal salts are concentrated in a modest volume and then feeds a pyrolytic oven in which metal oxides are produced to be recovered in the steel mill and acids to be recycled to the pickling.
However, pyrolytic systems have very high investment and management costs. In fact, they must operate at high temperatures (even higher than 800 ° C) with aggressive solutions, therefore they require significant energy consumption and constant and costly maintenance interventions.
Descrizione dell’ invenzione Description of the invention
The subject of this patent is a treatment and recovery process of almost all the components of a pickling wastewater, which allows them to be divided into totally recyclable secondary raw materials and avoids the need for landfilling.
The patent is also extended to the treatment of the sludge produced by the neutralization of such wastewater, and perhaps already accumulated in landfills, for which it is necessary to provide for a previous redissolution in an acid medium as described below.
Globally, it is estimated that around one million tons of exhausted pickling solutions are produced in the world, corresponding to the same number of tons of sludge disposed of in landfills.
The average composition of a pickling wastewater can vary depending on the type of alloy treated, the nature of the oxidation, the possible presence of a pre-treatment and, mainly, the acid mixture used in the pickling.
Macroscopicamente le soluzioni di decapaggio possono essere suddivise in due categorie: Macroscopically, pickling solutions can be divided into two categories:
soluzioni tradizionali contenenti acido nitrico e fluoridrico traditional solutions containing nitric and hydrofluoric acid
soluzioni “nitric free” contenenti acido solforico e fluoridrico nitric free solutions containing sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid
The composition of the corresponding wastewater generally falls within the following ranges:

Ossidi insolubili: 3 ÷ 20 g/1 Insoluble oxides: 3 ÷ 20 g / 1
A typical analysis of the metal content in insoluble oxides is as follows:
Fe 20 % Fe 20%
Cr 25 % Cr 25%
Mo 0,5 % Mo 0.5%
Ni 1,5 % Ni 1.5%
Mn 1,5 % Mn 1.5%
The first part of the process, object of this patent, first of all provides for the separation and recovery of insoluble oxides, rich in "refractory" metals such as chromium and molybdenum, through the passage of the solution in suitable decanters, sized considering that over 98% of the oxide microparticles has a diameter greater than 10 microns and a specific weight greater than 3 g / cm <3>.
The separated oxide is then transferred to a second decanter where it is left to compact to allow the recovery of the acid discharged with it, then washed with plenty of water (until the fluorides harmful to the steelworks refractories are eliminated), possibly added with a binding agent (eg organic resin, carboxymethyl cellulose or inorganic binder) to be selected according to the type of melting furnace and finally transferred to a briquetting machine.
The oxides are then discharged from the briquetting machine in the form of compact agglomerates that can be recovered in the reducing section from the preparation of the steel. With the same washing, settling and compaction unit, the oxides lost in the quenching section and in the rinses following pickling can also be recovered in the same way.
Returning to the pickling solution, after the removal of the insoluble oxides, the process involves the recovery of the free acids contained in it using a known and consolidated technology such as diffusion dialysis, Γ electrodialysis and acid retardation. The process continues by exploiting the different precipitation pH of the metal oxides present in the solution. As can be seen from the Pourbaix diagrams, the pH of the beginning of precipitation are for trivalent iron, for trivalent chromium 4, for nickel 8, for divalent iron 7.
It is therefore possible to separate the metal hydroxides using a different precipitation pH.
The first step consists in the oxidation of Fe to Fe, which is not necessary when it is necessary to treat solutions containing nitric acid in which the iron is already totally in trivalent form. Oxidation can be carried out with air or hydrogen peroxide or oxygen. The Fe is then precipitated as hydroxide in a settler at a suitable pH with caustic soda.
The caustic soda could be replaced by other alkaline hydroxide including milk of lime if the final recovery of the acids is not required (see below).
Before proceeding with the neutralization, the sludge produced by the purification of the rinsing water with lime milk is added to the solution, which consists of hydroxides of iron, chromium, nickel and molybdenum and calcium salts. Given the low pH of the solution, these sludges dissolve allowing the recovery of the components contained therein.
The precipitated iron hydroxide, with low chromium and nickel content, is then washed, dehydrated with a filter press or other means suitable for the purpose and then given to other industries as a secondary raw material.
Typical users of iron hydroxide are brick producers (roof tiles, bricks, etc.), cement factories and producers of iron oxides and salts.
The iron-free or in any case decidedly depleted solution, combined with the iron hydroxide washing water, is then alkalized until the other hydroxides such as chromium and nickel are completely precipitated.
The precipitated hydroxides are then dehydrated with microfiltration, filter press or other means suitable for the purpose and then transferred to a dissolver maintained at a controlled pH with sulfuric acid.
The sulphate solution then feeds the cathodic zone of an electrodialysis cell. The metals in the elementary state are thus deposited on the cathode. The working conditions are such that the deposit is dendritic and therefore easily removable through combs which pass at predetermined times near the cathode. The metal detached from the electrode in the form of pellets is collected in a special container at the bottom of the cell. After filtration and washing, these essentially chromium-nickel alloy pellets can be recovered directly in the steel plant.
It is also possible to recover the metals individually by providing a fractional precipitation of the hydroxides at different pHs.
Simultaneously with the deposition of metals in the cathode compartment, the concentration of sulfuric acid occurs in the anode compartment.
This acid is discharged when it reaches a certain concentration to be recovered in the phase, described above, of dissolving the hydroxides.
The use of a membrane cell was preferred because it allows to avoid the oxidation of the chromium to chromate ion on the anode, which could in any case be inhibited with the addition of MgO, and to keep the acid concentration at the cathode low, allowing to always have a very high faradic yield.
In the experimental tests it was also seen that the addition of some components, such as chelators and buffering agents, in the sulphate solution allows to optimize faradic yields.
The possibility of solubilizing the hydroxides with hydrochloric acid instead of sulfuric acid was also evaluated.
Experimental tests have shown the feasibility. However, a modification of the electrodialysis cell is required to avoid the passage of the chloride ion to the anode and the consequent evolution of chlorine.
The neutralized solution and now free of dissolved metals is composed of sodium salts of the anions of the acids present in the pickling (for former fluorides, sulphates and / or nitrates).
It is therefore possible to reform the pickling acids by using a strong cationic resin that retains the sodium ion by exchanging it with a hydrogen ion.
The resin can then be regenerated again using an inexpensive acid to be selected from hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid.
Alternatively, but with much higher costs, an electrodialysis unit can be used which allows to separate the sodium salts in the original acids, always to be recovered by pickling, and in caustic soda, to be reused in the hydroxide precipitation phase.
If it is decided to start with the sludge produced by the neutralization of pickling baths (eg by operating directly at landfills) instead of the exhausted pickling baths, it is necessary to consider a pre-dissolving of the sludge in acid.
Il processo successivamente segue passo passo quello descritto per i bagni di decapaggio esausti To keep the costs of the process low, it is possible to select the acid between sulfuric and hydrochloric, paying attention to the fact that sulfuric acid does not solubilize the calcium salts and that therefore the insoluble fraction must in any case be treated with hydrochloric acid if necessary. decided to recover the oxides. The process then follows step by step that described for exhausted pickling baths
ESEMPIO 1 (Vedi Tavola 2) EXAMPLE 1 (See Table 2)
The process in question is currently underway at one of the world's leading players in the production of long stainless steel products which owns the largest wire rod pickling line in the world.
La linea di decapaggio conta 8 vasche di trattamento aventi capacità pari a 40 me cadauna e la seguente composizione acida: The pickling line has 8 treatment tanks with a capacity of 40 m each and the following acid composition:
Vl÷5 Miscela di acido solforico e acido fluoridrico Vl ÷ 5 Mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid
V6÷7 Miscela di acido nitrico e acido fluoridrico V6 ÷ 7 Mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid
V8 Acido nitrico V8 Nitric acid
The wastewater coming from the pickling line is neutralized with lime milk and the resulting sludge is dehydrated with a filter press.
Come risultato vengono prodotte 9.000 tonnellate circa di fango aventi la seguente composizione media: As a result, about 9,000 tons of sludge are produced with the following average composition:
Ferro idrossido 12-15% Iron hydroxide 12-15%
Nichel idrossido 1 ,0- 1 ,5% Nickel hydroxide 1.0-1.5%
Cromo idrossido 1,5-2, 5% Chromium hydroxide 1.5-2.5%
Ossidi insolubili 5-10% Insoluble oxides 5-10%
These sludges are delivered to particular landfills as the concentration of nickel hydroxide is higher than 1% and a concentration of molybdenum in the aqueous eluate is higher than 1 ppm.
Hence the decision, by the property, to apply the process object of this patent.
The implementation of the project is in progress and involves the use of the following process scheme which is explanatory but not limitative of the purposes of the patent.
Most of the insoluble oxides are detached in the sulfur hydrofluoric pickling solutions. Part of these remain in the tank itself and part is removed by the subsequent washing phases with pressurized water.
Through the use of simple decanters (1 and 2) the oxides, which have a specific weight higher than 3 g / cm <3> and which are mainly composed of mixed oxides of Cr, Fe, Mo, Ni and Mn (Cr = 52%, Fe = 40%, Mo = 1.0%, Ni = 1.5%, Mn = 2.5%) are separated from the relative solutions.
The separated oxides are then transferred to a treatment unit (3) where they are successively: recovered the acids still present and washed the oxides with water up to pH 5.
The oxides are then transferred to a dehydration and compaction system (4) to form briquettes that can be recovered in the furnaces of the steel mill.
The acid coming from the decanters (1) is sent to a free acid recovery unit (5) operating with the acid delay principle. Similarly, a diffusion dialysis unit could have been used.
The recovered acids are recycled to the pickling tanks while the solution containing the salts is transferred to a reaction tank (6) where the divalent iron is oxidized to trivalent iron by hydrogen peroxide.
The resulting solution is then transferred to a neutralization unit (8) where it is mixed with the waste solutions coming from the tanks containing nitric acid (and for which, given the low turnover, there is no free acid recovery system) and with the sludge produced in the neutralization of the washing waters (7) (with the aim of recovering the metals contained in them). Once the three streams have been mixed, the resulting stream is then neutralized to a pH of approx. 3.5 with caustic soda.
Neutralization at pH 3.5 involves the precipitation of iron hydroxide which is then washed and dehydrated with a filter press (9) to be sold as a secondary raw material to companies that use it (e.g. brick industry, cement factories, etc. .). The solution at pH 3.5 is then neutralized to pH approx. 7.0 with further addition of caustic soda, or other equivalent, up to total precipitation of the hydroxides of nickel and chromium (10).
These hydroxides are then compacted by means of a microfiltration dehydration system, (11) and then transferred to a reaction tank in which they are solubilized with sulfuric acid (12).
The resulting solution is then sent to an electrodialysis cell (13) in which the metal is deposited at the catado and where, at the same time, Γ acid is regenerated.
The deposited metal is recovered in the form of pellets to be recycled in the melting furnaces of the steel plant while the acid is recycled in the hydroxide dissolution phase (12).
Returning to the sodium salts discharged, now metal-free, from the unit (10) these are transferred to an electroelectrodialysis unit (14) in which the acids are reformed (which are then recovered in the pickling tanks) and the caustic soda that is recycled in the neutralization phases (8 and 10) completely closing the cycle.

ESEMPIO 2 (Vedi Tavola 3) EXAMPLE 2 (See Table 3)
Come secondo esempio segnaliamo una importante società metallurgica in cui vengono decapati nastri in acciai inossidabile. As a second example we point out an important metallurgical company in which stainless steel strips are pickled.
The company has an annealing and pickling line capable of processing 150,000 tons of material and a second line, with double treatment capacity, is expected to be re-commissioned by the end of 2009.
The treatment line foresees the passage of the strip in annealing ovens followed by a cooling zone with water-air (quench), by an electrolytic pre-pickling with sulfuric acid and then by a chemical pickling with hydrofluoric acid.
An acid retard unit is installed on the hydrofluoric acid tank, preceded by a dirt separator that eliminates insoluble oxides.
AU’unità di depurazione vengono pertanto scaricati: The following are therefore downloaded to the purification unit:
gli ossidi insolubili (unitamente all’acido con essi trascinato) insoluble oxides (together with the acid entrained with them)
Approx. 3,500 tons / year of mud that are transferred to a proprietary landfill located in an area adjacent to the pickling.
The project therefore provides for the installation of a plant capable of treating the expected production on the second line when fully operational, thus allowing the material already accumulated in the landfill to be recovered in the meantime.
The cycle provides that the acid solutions are mixed in a reactor (1) together with the sludge accumulated in the landfill and the sludge coming from the rinsing water purification unit.
Hydrochloric acid is added to the mixer, to solubilize the calcium salts, and hydrogen peroxide (or equivalent oxidant) to oxidize the iron to trivalent.
From the reactor (1) the solution is transferred to the oxide recovery unit (2).
The recovered oxides, together with the oxides coming from the cooling of the strip with water and from the shot peening operations, are compacted in a briquetting machine (3) to be then recycled in the steel plant.
The clarified solution leaving the oxide recovery unit is then neutralized to pH 3.5 with milk of lime in the unit (4) resulting in the precipitation of iron hydroxide and calcium sulphate and fluoride. This precipitate, suitably dehydrated with a filter press (5) is then dried and delivered to the brick industry or cement factories.
The solution at pH 3.5 is then alkalized with caustic soda, or equivalent alkali, until total precipitation of the chromium and nickel hydroxides (7).
These hydroxides, suitably dehydrated in (8) and then redissolved with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid (9), are sent to the electrodialysis unit where the metals are separated in the form of recyclable pellets in a steel plant.
La soluzione reflua viene quindi inviata al depuratore esistente.(l 1) The waste solution is then sent to the existing purifier. (L 1)
Once the sludge accumulated in the landfill is finished, and with it the contribution of the regretted calcium ion can be slightly modified and then integrated with an electro-dialysis unit that allows the total recovery of hydrofluoric acid.
Dal progetto si conta di potere contare sul recupero di: From the project we count on being able to count on the recovery of:
800 Ton/anno di ossidi 800 tons / year of oxides
120 Ton/anno di nichel metallico 120 tons / year of metallic nickel
100 Ton/anno di cromo metallico 100 tons / year of metallic chrome
5.000 Ton/anno di ossido di ferro - sali di calcio 5,000 tons / year of iron oxide - calcium salts
