A further object of the present invention are the variants of the method described in claims 2 to 11.
A further object of the present invention is a device for carrying out the method, in its variants described in claims 12 to 26.
A further advantage of the measurement method according to the invention derives from the substantial independence of the distance measurement from any variations in intensity of the optical radiation beam projected by the transmission channel.
With the term optical radiation, in the present description it is intended to designate the electromagnetic radiation included in the wavelength range from ultraviolet to infrared. The measurement method according to the invention can be better understood by following the description of a basic embodiment, illustrated by way of non-limiting example in the attached drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a basic diagram of a device according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows the sensitivity curves of the two reception channels as a function of distance.
La Fig.3 mostra la funzione di misura della distanza ottenibile con il metodo oggetto del trovato Fig.3 shows the distance measurement function obtainable with the method according to the invention
Fig. 1 shows the basic diagram of a device which allows the measurement method object of the invention to be implemented.
The quantity to be measured is the distance x between the device and the surface 4.
The transmission channel 1 and the two reception channels 2 and 3 are fixed to the body of the device 5 so as to obtain a reciprocal positioning with the optical axes substantially parallel to each other, lying in a single plane and with the axes of the reception channels positioned at a distance dyl and dy2 with respect to that of the transmission channel. The transmission channel 1 uses a means for generating the optical radiation and is equipped with optical means with characteristics such as to generate a beam with a divergence angle a, characterized by an intensity distribution substantially symmetrical with respect to this axis and preferably characterized by an approximately Gaussian profile according to a generic direction orthogonal to the same axis.
The reception channels 2 and 3, with characteristics substantially identical to each other, use optical radiation detecting means sensitive to the radiation of the wavelength emitted by the emitting diode. The reception channels can be equipped with optical means having characteristics similar to those of the transmission channel, resulting in this case the sensitivity distribution of the reception beam substantially symmetrical with respect to the optical axis and preferably characterized by an approximately Gaussian profile. according to a generic direction orthogonal to this axis.
The use of transmission and reception beams characterized by distribution with approximately Gaussian profiles does not constitute a limiting choice for the realization of the measurement method object of the invention, since it can usefully be used for this purpose beams having different characteristics. The use of beams with approximately Gaussian profile distribution constitutes an advantageous choice since this characteristic can be easily obtained with simple optical systems.
The signals of the reception channels are connected to an electronic unit 6 provided with means for processing such signals.
The electronic unit is also provided with means for powering the means for generating the optical radiation connected to it.
For the sake of simplicity, in the described exemplary configuration a solution is adopted with the transmission and reception beams characterized by substantially equal divergence values, this condition not being limiting or necessary for the realization of the method according to the invention. Assuming as the x-y plane the one in which the optical axes of the transmission and reception channels lie with the x axis parallel to these axes, the distributions of intensity 'and, respectively, of sensitivity' in the y-z plane, orthogonal to the optical axes, to generic distance x can be described by the relation:
nella quale la o(x)e' definita dalla relazione: in which o (x) is defined by the relation:
essendo a la divergenza del fascio, ossia l'angolo rispetto all'asse in corrispondenza del quale si verifica una attenuazione al 13,5% del valore presente in corrispondenza dell'asse. being a the divergence of the beam, ie the angle with respect to the axis at which an attenuation occurs at 13.5% of the value present at the axis.
Il flusso radiante incidente sull'elemento di area della superficie si ricava con la relazione: The radiant flux incident on the surface area element is obtained with the relation:
ove: where:
L'intensità' radiante dell'elemento di area della superficie risulta: The radiant intensity of the surface area element is:
ove where
ps = riflettivita' della superficie ps = reflectivity of the surface
The irradiance on the generic reception channel deriving from the surface area element is * given by the relation:
The distribution of sensitivity <1> of the generic reception channel, referred to the surface, is described by the following relationship:
ove where
dy = distanza tra l'asse ottico del canale di trasmissione e quello del canale di ricezione considerato dy = distance between the optical axis of the transmission channel and that of the considered reception channel
Il flusso al generico canale di ricezione dall'elemento di area dell'oggetto risulta: The flow to the generic reception channel from the area element of the object results:
ove: where:
Ar = area della superficie del ricevitore Il flusso totale all'ingresso del generico canale di ricezione si ricava integrando sulla porzione di superficie interessata dai fasci e risulta dalla seguente relazione: Ar = area of the surface of the receiver The total flux at the entrance of the generic reception channel is obtained by integrating on the portion of the surface affected by the beams and results from the following relationship:
The same relation can be written in the following form highlighting the terms independent of the distance x:
ove where
This last function represents the dependence of the radiant power collected by the receiver on the distance of the surface.
The function g {x) relating to the generic reception channel is strongly influenced by the distance dy between the optical axis of this channel and the optical axis of the transmission channel.
By positioning two reception channels at different distances dy (center distances) with respect to the optical axis of the transmission channel, it is possible to obtain trends of the functions g (x) relating to these substantially different channels over determined distance intervals.
Fig. 2 represents, by way of example, the trends, represented in arbitrary units, of the functions gl (x) and g2 (x) corresponding to the condition of beams with divergence a = 30 ° and distances dyl and dy2 respectively equal at 1.5mm and 3.0mm between the transmit channel and the two receive channels.
The different trend of the two functions over a certain interval of distances is evident. A similar result can be obtained on different distance intervals by using different combinations of divergence values of the beams and spacing between them.
The measurement method according to the invention exploits, for the measurement of the distance x, the difference of the functions gl (x) and g2 (x) relating to two reception channels with the optical axes placed at different distances dyl and dy2 with respect to that of the transmitter and parallel with respect to it, since the measurements CI (x) and C2 (x) of the flows collected by these reception channels are linked to the values of these functions gl (x) and g2 (x) by a constant of proportionality ', and it exploits a particular processing of the measurements of the two flows collected by the two reception channels such that the elimination of the terms independent of this distance is obtained, among which mainly the reflectivity coefficient of the surface and the radiant flux of the transmission channel.
A possible form of this processing procedure, illustrated by way of non-limiting example, is described by the following relationship between the measurements of the reception channels C1 (x) and C2 (x) and the distance measurement S (x):
Fig.3 represents, by way of non-limiting example, the distance measurement S (x) which can be obtained by processing the measurements of the reception channels according to the procedure described above, under the same conditions described for Fig.2.
The distance measurement obtainable by the method object of the invention is advantageously characterized by excellent linearity characteristics over extended measurement ranges.
Using the measurement method according to the invention it is therefore possible to obtain, starting from the measurement of the flows of the reception channels, a signal strictly correlated to the distance to be measured and at the same time independent of the reflectivity characteristics of the surface and the radiant flux of the transmission channel. The method object of the invention can be used for the realization of distance measurement devices using different embodiments, some of which are described below by way of non-limiting example.
In the preferred embodiments described below, the optical axes of the transmission and reception channels are coplanar and the transmission channel is placed in a lateral position with respect to the reception channels, other embodiments may have the optical axes of the three parallel channels but not coplanar, or coplanar but with the transmission channel in an intermediate position with respect to the two reception channels and at different center distances with respect to them.
In one embodiment, the optical means of the transmission and reception channels can be advantageously made by using three sections of optical fiber, one for each channel, each section has one of the terminations housed in a support having a configuration suitable for realizing the reciprocal positioning of said terminations according to the geometry envisaged by the method object of the invention, so as to constitute a measuring probe. The remaining terminations of these optical fibers are connected respectively, the one forming part of the transmission channel to a means for generating the optical radiation and those forming part of the receiving channels to the means for detecting the optical radiation. Said means for the generation and detection of the optical radiation are preferably housed in a suitable body or container in which the electronic unit to which these means are connected can also be housed. This electronic unit is equipped with means for acquiring the signals of the optical radiation detectors, with means for their processing, with means for powering the optical radiation generator and with means for generating electrical output signals.
In an executive variant, the means for the generation and detection of the optical radiation can be advantageously integrated into the electronic unit, with considerable simplification of the manufacturing.
The optical fibers used can conveniently be of the type in plastic material (Plastic Optical Fiber) commonly used for data transmission, in particular the terminations of this type of fiber, with a diameter of Imm and made with a flat and orthogonal optical termination surface. to the optical axis, are suitable for generating beams with the optical characteristics indicated in the previous description.
In a variant embodiment, the realization of the desired optical characteristics for the transmission and reception channels can be obtained by means of a different type of processing of the optical termination surface of the optical fibers, for example according to a curved rather than a flat surface, or by means of the additional use of optical elements such as, by way of non-limiting example, refractive lenses, gradient index lenses (GRIN-rod lens), diffraction lenses or combinations of these elements.
The means for generating the optical radiation can usefully be constituted by an emitting diode or LED, or by a laser diode or by a generic source of optical radiation.
The means for the detection of the optical radiation can be usefully constituted by photodiodes, or by phototransistor or by photodiodes with integrated transimpedance amplifier, or by photodiodes with integrated light-to-frequency conversion device, or by analogous optoelectronic devices sensitive to the electromagnetic radiation of the wavelength emitted by the means for generating the optical radiation.
In an executive variant, the device for carrying out the method object of the invention can consist of a single body or container in which the transmission and reception channels and the electronic unit are housed. The optical means of the transmission and reception channels can be constituted, similarly to what is foreseen in the embodiment described above, by sections of optical fiber, each of these fibers has one of the terminations housed in the external wall of the container and positioned with respect to the others according to the geometry envisaged by the method object of the invention, and the second termination connected to the means for generating or respectively detecting the optical radiation, thus resulting in these optical fiber sections completely included in the container. Also in the case of the embodiment variant described above, the realization of different optical characteristics of the beams of the transmission and reception channels can be obtained by means of particular processing of the termination of the optical fibers or by using optical elements as indicated for the embodiment. previously described.
In a further embodiment variant the device can be constituted by a single body or container, the optical means for the formation of the transmission and reception beams can be constituted by optical elements such as, by way of non-limiting example, refraction lenses, lenses with refractive index gradient (GRIN-rod lens), diffraction lenses or combinations of these elements, and the means for the generation and detection of the optical radiation can be constituted by optoelectronic components of the type commonly available on the market since these optical elements and such optoelectronic components assembled in a suitable way with each other and housed in one of the external walls of the container with reciprocal positioning in accordance with the geometry envisaged by the method object of the invention.
In a variant of the embodiment described above, the transmission and reception channels can be constituted by optoelectronic components of the so-called integrated optics type, i.e. with optical elements made in the same container of the component or in any case preassembled thereto, normally available on the market. , these components are housed in one of the external walls of the container with reciprocal positioning in accordance with the geometry envisaged by the method object of the invention.
In a variant embodiment, the means for detecting the optical radiation and the processing means can be realized as a single component in the so-called integrated microcircuit form.
In a further embodiment, the electronic unit can be equipped with means for entering reference values for the distance and with means for comparing these values with the measured distance and with means for generating signals or commands in function of the result of this comparison, so as to detect and signal the exceeding, increasing or decreasing, by the measured distance of said reference values, thus creating a device of the so-called sensor or proximity switch 'type advantageously equipped of insensitivity characteristics to the reflectivity coefficient of the measured surface.
The method object of the invention also allows the realization of devices and sensors for the measurement of different physical quantities when this measurement can be traced back to a distance or length measurement by means of a suitable transduction principle. As a non-limiting example of these possible applications, it is possible to indicate the measurement of acceleration by measuring the displacement of a body connected with an elastic constraint to the structure that carries the distance measurement sensor, the measurement of the pressure of fluids by measuring the deformation of a flexible diaphragm and the measurement of the vibrations of a body by measuring the distance of the surface of this body with respect to an immovable reference to which the distance measuring device is integral.
Naturally, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described and illustrated above but can be widely varied and modified, above all constructively, without abandoning the guiding principle described above and claimed hereinafter.
