Abstract

Probiotic bacteria, in particular lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, are proposed for use in the treatment and/or prevention of ocular immune pathologies and specifically in allergic conjunctivitis, with particular reference to allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis and giant papillary conjunctivitis. Applied either in the form of a topical ophthalmic preparation, in particular as eye-drops, or in a form for oral administration, such as a drinkable suspension, probiotics have a therapeutic activity on allergic conjunctivitis and, if administered as prophylaxis, can reduce the number, duration and intensity of allergic conjunctival reactions.
