DESCRIZIONE DESCRIPTION
In the scientific world, with particular reference to that which deals with territorial and environmental monitoring, but not necessarily limited to this, sensors with a rather high dynamic range are normally used which are however particularly expensive. This is due to the fact that quality is usually obtained by means of electro-mechanical sensors, such as force-balanced accelerometers, which are consequently expensive to produce.
In recent years, a whole series of very low cost sensors have been made available, MEMS, Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems, which have costs in the order of one thousandth of that of traditional sensors. However, they are generally characterized by a strong noise level, which also increases as the sampling frequency considered increases, normally according to a law of the type thus. (Hz, / 2). In fact, there are MEMS sensors on the market characterized by significantly lower noise levels. However, since they are not produced in industrially significant quantities, they reach costs not dissimilar to those of traditional sensors, without completely equaling their performance. There is therefore the need to satisfy an intermediate market segment that allows satisfactory performance to be provided without leading to the high costs of current instruments, which consequently represent a major limit to the diffusion of these sensors. In the case of accelerometers, for example, the Civil Protection Department has a few hundred sensors while in Italy there are 8,000 municipalities and an even more significant number of urban centers. Instruments that cost 5 or 10% of the current ones could potentially cover the entire territory.
The object of the present invention is to provide a relatively low cost system which, by using the new MEMS sensors, can allow a monitoring of sufficient quality for technical-scientific uses. These sensors provide an analog signal, in terms of voltage variation of a positive current, proportional to the measured signal.
The system object of the present invention is based on the principle of using numerous low-cost sensors. A procedure for summing up the signals coming out of these sensors ensures a strong reduction of the electrical noise present in them, in this case the threshold is lowered by a factor N where N is the number of sensors. However, if the flow of analog data that these sensors generate were immediately digitized and then summed, it would be necessary to provide a hardware anti-aliasing filter and an analog-to-digital converter channel for each sensor channel and these components are, in turn, very expensive. In particular, given the high-frequency characteristics of the noise, filters must be very sophisticated in order to effectively cut off the higher frequencies that consist essentially of noise. The solution is therefore a tool that uses a certain number of MEMS sensors in parallel, whose signals are first summed in an analog way and then filtered and digitized. To be efficient and simple to make the invention, the voltages present in the circuit must remain very low. By means of suitable resistors, the voltage of the analog signal is therefore lowered before the analog sum. The principle therefore is to divide the voltage coming from each sensor by 1 / N and then add it analogically.
The invention is described with reference to the attached Figure 1, which illustrates a non-limiting example of any embodiment of the invention, by means of the electrical diagram of only the portion of the instrument object of the present invention, therefore only of a way to implement the analogue sum of the signal: downstream of this it is necessary to foresee both the presence of an anti-aliasing filtering system and an analog-digital converter.
Referring to Figure I, the electrical diagram of the analog adder of the signal coming from the MEMS sensors is illustrated. With (1) we indicate a series of MEMS sensors powered with positive voltage (2) and with relative grounding (3). The analog output signal from the sensors (1) then encounters a resistance (4) and, through a node (5), is divided between a branch characterized by a feedback resistance (6) which, being of a lower value than that of the resistors (4), has the effect of reducing the amplitude of the signal, and another branch which, through an operational amplifier (7), is reconnected to the first branch in the node (8) and then exits towards a system of anti- aliasing and the analog to digital converter, not shown. The operational amplifier (7) is supplied with negative voltage (9) and is equipped with relative grounding (10). The resistor (11) is sized in such a way as to minimize the eddy currents coming from the inverting input. Any variations in the supply voltage (9) are balanced with a polarizing capacitor (12), equipped with relative grounding (13). The output voltage from the operational amplifier (7) will obviously be negative and must subsequently be inverted.
