Il polistirene espanso è uno dei materiali più utilizzati come isolante termico nelle costruzioni, viene solitamente usato nella colorazione bianca che lo protegge dalle radiazioni ultraviolette. La tecnica ha oggi messo a punto prodotti in polistirene espanso con un lambda migliorato grazie all’inserimento di particolare sostanze quali grafite o carbone amorfo, la migliorata resistenza termica comporta una colorazione grigia o nera che se il prodotto rimane esposta alla radiazione solare ne comporta un precoce invecchiamento con la perdita delle caratteristiche meccaniche. Procedendo all’inserimento del prodotto a lambda migliorato in una fase successiva è possibile anche scegliere le caratteristiche meccaniche dei due prodotti in funzione delle esigenze tecniche, conducibilità termica o resistenza meccanica.
