Campo dell’Invenzione Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to the field of the transmission of radio signals characterized by a coherent demodulation and more precisely to a method, and to a device, for the automatic stabilization of the local oscillator frequency in radio receivers using a local oscillator with dielectric resonator tunable on broadband.
Arte nota Known art
Coherent demodulation is used in most of the professional transmission systems, both public and private, among which a prominent place undoubtedly cover microwave radio links and satellite communication systems.
Fig. 1 shows a typical block diagram of a transmitter and a receiver, connected to the same antenna, which are used in the above professional systems. The schematization is completely general and can represent any system, both analog and digital, characterized by a coherent demodulation.
With reference to fig .1, we note a block 1 at the input of which a signal in baseband Sy arrives which must be transmitted. The Sy signal is in most cases a complex signal, obtained by suitably multiplexing several elementary signals coming, for example, from several telephone channels. In order to maintain a greater generality of exposure, in fig. 1 a multiplexing block of said channels is not indicated. Block 1 comprises circuits which perform known operations on the signal Sy, such as filtering, which are preliminary to the operations of modulation of a carrier, frequency conversion and subsequent transmission. The signal outgoing from block 1 reaches a first input of a modulator 2, which uses the input signal as the modulating signal of an oscillation at intermediate frequency fj present at a second input of the same block. The modulated signal outgoing from block 2 in turn reaches an input of a frequency converter 3 (up-converter), which also receives an oscillation at a folt frequency generated by a local transmission oscillator 4. Block 3 converts the aforementioned signal modulated into a radio frequency transmission signal. The signal outgoing from block 3 is amplified by a linear radio frequency power amplifier, represented by block 5, and then coupled to a first port of a directional coupler represented by block 6. A second port of the directional coupler 6 is coupled to a antenna 7, while a third port of the same to a radio frequency reception amplifier 8 characterized by a low value of the noise figure. On the paths that go from block 5 to block 6 and from these to block 8 there are respectively inserted a transmission bandpass filter and a reception bandpass filter, not visible in the figure, generally with different midband frequencies.
The directional coupler 6 and the respective filters (duplexer) allow the irradiation of the transmission signal by the antenna 7 without disturbing the reception path and the simultaneous correct routing of a reception signal picked up by the antenna 7 towards the amplifier 8. The signal coming out of the amplifier 8 reaches an input of a second frequency converter 9 (down-converter) which also receives an oscillation at a folr frequency generated by a local receiving oscillator 10. Block 9 converts to intermediate frequency fi the radio frequency reception signal present at its input. The signal outgoing from block 9 reaches a demodulator 11 which brings it back to the base band, using for the purpose an intermediate frequency carrier reconstructed locally starting from the carrier information contained in the signal outgoing from the converter 9, after appropriate intermediate frequency filtering, by of a filter not visible in fig. 1.
The base band signal at the output of the demodulator 11 reaches a block 12 which performs known operations on the signal suitable for restoring a received signal SR, a faithful copy of that ST originally transmitted. By analogy with what has been said for the ST signal, the SR signal must be demultiplexed into the single component signals. Also in this case, in order to maintain a greater generality of exposure, a demultiplexing block of said signals is not indicated, while for reasons of simplicity a processing block, also present, is not indicated, which keeps under control the operation of the various control blocks. fig. 1.
As is known, the operating performance of professional transmission systems which include the apparatuses of fig. 1 are generally subjected to very strict specifications, compliance with which often involves expensive and bulky circuit solutions. For example, for the transmit amplifier 5 a good linearity is required even at the maximum amplification values, for the receive amplifier 8 a low noise of the input stage, for the local oscillators 4 and 10 a high spectral purity and very good long-term stability of the generated frequency. In addition to this, a very appreciated feature in receivers is the possibility of varying the local oscillator frequency over a wide band, in order to select the desired frequency range.
In the older transmission systems, all the blocks of fig. 1 were made in analogue technique and the transmission carrier was modulated continuously by the analogue signal Sy. In cases of multiplexing of several telephone channels on a single transmission medium, multiplexing took place in frequency division (FOM) and involved high implementation costs.
With the emergence of digital electronics it has become more convenient, where possible, to appropriately digitize the starting analog signals and apply digital techniques (DSP) to the signals thus obtained. In cases of multiplexing of digital signals, the technical note of time division (TDM) is used for this purpose, in which case the modulating signal Sy is constituted by a string of bits. Modulation techniques have also evolved to better adapt to the peculiar characteristics of such a modulating signal. In particular, we have gone from continuous type modulations of the transmission carrier to discrete type modulations, among which we recall those PSK and QAM and their variants. These modulations, otherwise known as digital modulations, are included in the field of technique where the invention is placed, as they also presuppose a coherent type of demodulation. In fact, the demodulator 11 comprises a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) inserted in a phase locked mesh (PLL) for the reconstruction of an intermediate frequency carrier used for demodulation.
By adopting digital modulation, the baseband operations carried out by blocks 1 and 12 and those at intermediate frequency carried out by the modulator 2 and demodulator blocks 11 radically change with respect to analog modulation, while the radiofrequency operations carried out by blocks 3 remain completely unchanged. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Thanks to the high operating speed reached by digital circuits and to the potential offered by computer-assisted design, it is now possible to realize the blocks relating to the baseband, the modulator and the demodulator by means of a single highly integrated circuit, thereby obtaining a considerable reduction of overall dimensions and greater economy and reliability of the equipment.
For obvious reasons, it is not possible to extend the same advantages to the remaining blocks, whose construction can only be analog and therefore has a significant impact on the overall cost of the equipment. Therefore, all those technical solutions that allow economies in the analog part are desirable, especially if operating in the microwave field.
The invention in question lies precisely in this direction, which is aimed in particular at the achievement of some advantages in the realization of local microwave oscillators. As it had already been said, what is required from a local oscillator is frequency stability, spectral purity, wide tuning range, limited dimensions and low cost, characteristics which are difficult to obtain jointly.
In a previous European patent application No. 835553 in the name of the same applicant, the above problems were faced and solved in the way that results from the following procedure of automatic stabilization of the local oscillator frequency in radio receivers comprising a local oscillator with dielectric resonator tunable on a wide band , an intermediate frequency converter of the receiving signal, a demodulator which includes a VCO inserted in a PLL for the reconstruction of an intermediate frequency carrier used for demodulation; said oscillator including manual and electronic tuning means, acting on which a desired reception channel is initially tuned; the process comprising the initial memorization of an optimum voltage value for the control of said VCO and the following phases repeated cyclically:
a) acquisizione del valore di temperatura in prossimità di detto VCO; a) acquisition of the temperature value in the vicinity of said VCO;
b) correzione di detto valore memorizzato di tensione in funzione di detto valore di temperatura; b) correcting said stored voltage value as a function of said temperature value;
c) acquisizione di un valore attuale della tensione di controllo di detto VCO e confronto con il detto valore ottimo corretto, per l'ottenimento di un segnale errore; d) variazione elettronica di sintonia di detto oscillatore locale sulla base di detto segnale errore, la direzione e l'entità di tale variazione essendo tali da annullare detto segnale errore. c) acquisition of a present value of the control voltage of said VCO and comparison with said correct optimum value, in order to obtain an error signal; d) electronic tuning variation of said local oscillator on the basis of said error signal, the direction and magnitude of said variation being such as to cancel said error signal.
The above method is particularly aimed at local microwave oscillators that use broadband tunable DROs (Dielectric Resonator Oscillators), or otherwise called swerves. In the aforementioned DROs, the tuning variation can be obtained indifferently both by electronic and mechanical means, the latter operated manually. The mechanical means comprise a tuning screw whose rotation primarily determines the choice of the frequency range. The electronic means comprise a varicap diode which allows fine tuning of the tuning within the selected channel. Unfortunately, the oscillation frequency of skidable DROs has a decidedly very low long-term stability, which means that due to thermal drift and aging, the generated frequency slowly moves from the initial value up to outside the predetermined limits.
The previous invention carried out by the same applicant made it advantageous to use the DROs, despite the limits highlighted, since the drawback due to their low frequency stability was neutralized by continually adjusting the control voltage of the DRO to the actual temperature values of operation. This presupposed the use of a temperature sensor that provided a useful voltage for the aforementioned regulation. The knowledge of a second voltage was also necessary, and precisely that of controlling the VCO included in the demodulator. Both voltages, converted to digital, were used in the determination of an error signal for the DRO tuning control.
The method of the previous invention, while solving the problems of drifting DROs very well, nevertheless has some residual drawbacks which essentially derive from the explicit idea of monitoring the temperature inside the apparatuses.
A first of these drawbacks is that of having to know the law governing the displacement of the working point of the VCO included in the demodulator as a function of the temperature. However, it is not always easy to determine this law which, in the final analysis, is linked to the particular circuit arrangement of the VCO and to the individual active devices used. This may require an experimental determination of the aforementioned law for each type of VCO used in the equipment.
A second drawback is that of having to equip a temperature sensor and two analog / digital converters, the latter respectively for the voltage supplied by the temperature sensor and for the VCO control voltage.
A third, albeit small, drawback is that of obtaining the error signal for the DRO control in two stages, i.e. by first adjusting an optimal voltage value initially stored, corresponding to the working point of the VCO in optimal temperature conditions, and then calculating the error as a deviation from this adequate value.
Scopi dell'Invenzione Aims of the Invention
Therefore, the purpose of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the previous invention, although filed in the name of the same applicant, essentially due to the idea of explicitly measuring the operating temperature and using this information for the determination of an error signal for control of the skidable DRO.
Sommario dell'Invenzione Summary of the Invention
To achieve these purposes, the present invention relates to an automatic stabilization process of the local oscillator frequency in radio receivers comprising a local oscillator with a dielectric resonator tunable on a wide band, an intermediate frequency converter of the reception signal, a demodulator which includes a VCO inserted in a PLL for the reconstruction of an intermediate frequency local carrier used for demodulation; said oscillator including manual and electronic tuning means, acting on which a desired reception channel is initially tuned; the procedure comprising the following phases repeated cyclically:
a) acquisizione di un valore attuale di frequenza di detta portante locale generata dal VCO; a) acquisition of an actual frequency value of said local carrier generated by the VCO;
b) confronto del valore attuale di frequenza di detta portante locale con un valore nominale di frequenza intermedia, memorizzato prima delle fasi ripetute ciclicamente, per l'ottenimento di un segnale errore indicativo dello scostamento in frequenza di detta portante locale da detto valore nominale per effetto della temperatura e/o dell'invecchiamento; b) comparison of the current frequency value of said local carrier with a nominal value of intermediate frequency, stored before the cyclically repeated phases, in order to obtain an error signal indicative of the deviation in frequency of said local carrier from said nominal value due to temperature and / or aging;
c) confronto del valore assoluto di detto segnale errore con una opportuna soglia positiva, il superamento della quale genera un criterio valido per l'inclusione nel ciclo di una successiva fase; c) comparison of the absolute value of said error signal with a suitable positive threshold, the exceeding of which generates a valid criterion for the inclusion in the cycle of a subsequent phase;
d) in cui detto segnale errore viene utilizzato per comandare una variazione elettronica di sintonia di detto oscillatore locale, la direzione e l'entità di tale variazione essendo tali da annullare detto segnale errore, come descritto nella rivendicazione 1. d) wherein said error signal is used to control an electronic tuning variation of said local oscillator, the direction and magnitude of said variation being such as to cancel said error signal, as described in claim 1.
As you can see, the procedure in question is no longer linked to the idea of measuring the temperature in the vicinity of the VCO but rather the frequency of the oscillation generated by the VCO included in the demodulator, whose value is necessarily influenced by the temperature. The calculation of the error based on the frequency deviation is direct and easier than that provided for in the previous method and, which is of no small importance, is carried out on quantities that are already digital. The use of a meter for the purpose is much less expensive than that of two A / D converters and a thermal sensor, and is more reliable and accurate.
The process object of the present invention provides the receiver which carries it out with all the advantages of the previous invention, advantages which derive essentially from the use of a skidable DRO, without however inheriting the drawbacks highlighted. Also in this case the procedure is able to neutralize any frequency instability of the transmitter.
It should also be noted that it is very limiting to consider the procedure in question as the operation of a common PLL, as the apparent similarity would seem to suggest, since in a PLL the error signal arises from the real-time comparison of the VCO frequency with a reference frequency, either generated locally by an autonomous local oscillator, or extracted from the incoming signal, while in the case of the invention the comparison takes place with a fixed reference value, obtained as will be seen below, and stored once and for all during an initialization phase. The purposes of the process in question also differ from those of a common PLL, which has as its main purpose that of generating a local signal perfectly synchronized with the reference, regardless of the thermal drift suffered by the latter. Therefore, the tuning output of the tuned channel can always occur in a common PLL due to the effect of both thermal drift and aging.
Another object of the present invention is an automatic stabilization device of the local oscillator frequency which implements the process of the invention, as described in claim 10.

Detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the invention As regards fig. 1 it has already been fully described in the introductory part referring to the known art.
With reference to fig. 2, in which the elements common to fig. 1 are indicated with the same symbols, we note that the transmission system shown there differs from the known one of fig. 1 mainly due to the presence of a control block CONTR. The CONTR block includes a PROC block, a digital / analog D / A converter and a COUNTER counter. the PROC block represents a microprocessor generating a disposition with the additional hardware necessary for its operation and further interfacing. A VCO block 13 inside the demodulator 11 is inserted in a PLL (not shown in the figure) to reconstruct a local carrier at intermediate frequency fVCo sent to the clock input of the COUNTER counter, at whose counting enabling input also receives a signal fgate generated by the microprocessor PROC.
In operation, the COUNTER counter behaves like a frequency meter which supplies a binary value corresponding to the number of periods of the carrier fvco included within an observation time interval of about 40 ms, equivalent to the duration of the enabling signal fgate. This signal is a square wave with a period of about 80 ms. At the beginning of each new counting cycle the contents of the COUNTER counter are reset. The choice of an observation window lasting 40 ms allows you to count about 30 Kpulses of fvco at 70 MHz, the value thus averaged over the counting window, as well as being sufficiently reliable, allows you to eliminate rapid variations due to carrier recovery algorithm. The time base for generating the fgate is again that which times the microprocessor PROC, which refers to a combined oscillator comprising known means for stabilizing the frequency with the temperature already provided by the manufacturer.
Block 12, relating to baseband operations on the demodulated signal, supplies an alarm bit LOF to the microprocessor PROC. The latter processes the information received and supplies the D / A converter with a digital signal, which it converts into a voltage Vdro which reaches a control input of the receiving local oscillator 10.
The example of fig. 2 refers to a digital microwave radio link, whose operation is illustrated below with particular reference to blocks 1, 2, 11 and 12, affected by the digital signal, and to the control block CONTR. which is the one most involved in the invention in question.
The ST input signal is a numeric signal coming from an SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) multiplex. It should be noted that the choice of this type of signal is linked only to the specific non-limiting example, since the present invention is totally independent of the type of signal in the baseband.
For further details, the characteristics of SDH type signals are described in CCITT Recommendations G.707, G.708 and G.709.
The operations performed by block 1 on the input signal S-p mainly consist in the conversion of the line code and in the addition of any service channels.
The modulator 2 adds to the digital signal supplied by block 1 redundancy bits obtained by appropriately coding the string of input bits in order to be able to correct any errors present in the demodulated signal. The redundant signal is digitally filtered in an optimal way for shaping the transmission channel and then used to modulate an intermediate frequency carrier fj. The value of fj is the classic one of 70 MHz, generated by an autonomous reference quartz oscillator. The band occupied by the modulated signal is 28 MHz.
The transmit local oscillator 4 is a high Q DRO tuned to the center band frequency of the channel to be transmitted ± 70 MHz. The transmit signal outgoing from the frequency converter 3 can be set within a frequency range from 7.1 and 8.5 GHz, through the appropriate choice of the DRO 4.
As regards the reception part, the only one that really concerns the invention, it should be specified that the reception local oscillator 10 is a known type DRO which has a tuning interval of 350 MHz, such as to allow the selection of well 12 different channels by turning a tuning screw. The oscillation frequency f0 | r, as well as manually, can be varied within a narrow range of frequencies, even electronically by acting on the bias voltage of a varicap diode. The amplitude of the tuning interval allowed by the varicap diode is some MHz, which is not a problem for the purposes of the invention, since the electronic tuning is used to introduce a correction in the tuning of a channel already selected manually.
As already mentioned, in the absence of appropriate corrections made by the CONTR block, the thermal variations of the environment in which the DRO 10 is inserted could cause excessive variations in the frequency of the local oscillator folr. As a result of the frequency conversion, the same variations would thus occur in the value of the intermediate frequency carrier fj outgoing from the frequency converter 9 and cause serious problems in demodulation.
As is known, the reconstruction of the intermediate frequency carrier by the demodulator 11 takes place on the basis of the carrier information contained in the signal fj outgoing from the converter 9, after suitable intermediate frequency filtering by a filter, not visible in fig. 2. The local carrier is used by the demodulator to bring the received signal back to the baseband. Subsequently, the synchronisms for reading the bits are recovered within the demodulator 11 and the redundancy is examined on the bits read and the errors corrected.
Block 12 receives the digital signal processed by demodulator 11, searches for frame synchronism and extracts the service channels, and finally converts the string of bits into the line code, returning the original signal. If for various reasons it is not possible to synchronize the frames, block 12 provides an alarm bit called LOF (Loss of Frame) for signaling the loss of frame synchronism.
In the light of what has been said, it is now evident that the nature of the serious drawbacks due to the excessive variations in the folr frequency consist in the possible loss of locking of the PLL included in the demodulator 11 and in the distortion of the intermediate frequency signal caused by the deviation of the carrier f, with respect to to the midband value of the intermediate frequency filter.
The processing carried out by the microprocessor PROC aims to make the aforementioned appropriate corrections to keep the value of the folr frequency constant as the temperature varies and with aging. The operation of the microprocessor PROC is regulated by a program whose flow chart is illustrated in Figures 3a and 3b, which will be discussed below.
Considering the operation of the PLL belonging to the demodulator 11, once the locking has occurred the phase error is zero and the VCO oscillates at a frequency corresponding to that of the transmission IF oscillator, unless the difference between the frequencies of the radio frequency oscillators. This frequency in theoretical operating conditions assumes the fott value of 70 MHz. The aforementioned value, or in a completely equivalent way the corresponding digital number of pulses within the predetermined observation interval (40 ms), is taken as the frequency reference fQtt for all subsequent processing of the stabilization process. This means that a deviation of the actual value of fvco from fott due to the effect of temperature or aging or, in a completely equivalent way, of folr from its optimum value, generates an error signal E proportional to the extent of the deviation.
With reference to figures 3a and 3b, the procedure for automatic stabilization of the local oscillator frequency object of the invention is now examined in detail, whose execution is preceded by a rotation of the tuning screw of the DRO 10 until reaching a position corresponding to that of a channel you want to tune in. The procedure distinguishes between three different operating conditions indicated as: Start, Normal and Alarm, which correspond to different execution strategies.
After the start, in phase F1 the microprocessor initiates some registers and suitable memory areas subsequently used, in particular the content of a COUNT counter is reset. The program then enters the Start condition consisting of phases F2 to F8, in which:
• nella fase F2 viene generata una successione di valori di Vdro il cui andamento nel tempo costituisce una gradinata di valori discreti, tale da approssimare una rampa di tensione. La tensione Vdro agisce sul diodo varicap compreso nel DRO 10 e provoca una variazione della frequenza folr di ±2 MHz attorno al valore centrale di funzionamento; • in phase F2 a succession of Vdro values is generated whose trend over time constitutes a staircase of discrete values, such as to approximate a voltage ramp. The Vdro voltage acts on the varicap diode included in the DRO 10 and causes a variation of the folr frequency of ± 2 MHz around the central operating value;
• nella successiva fase F3 viene esaminata la condizione logica dell'allarme LOF; finché l'allarme è presente significa che il PLL del demodulatore 11 non ha ancora raggiunto l'aggancio, vengono quindi ripetute ciclicamente le fasi F2 ed F3 finché l’allarme sparisce e il PLL risulta agganciato. A questo punto inizia un ciclo di ottimizzazione iterativa del valore della frequenza di oscillatore locale folr In prima approssimazione, nel programma si è ragionevolmente supposto che per tutta la durata del suddetto ciclo il PLL mantenga l’aggancio; • in the following phase F3 the logical condition of the LOF alarm is examined; as long as the alarm is present it means that the PLL of demodulator 11 has not yet reached the latch, then phases F2 and F3 are repeated cyclically until the alarm disappears and the PLL is engaged. At this point an iterative optimization cycle of the value of the local oscillator frequency folr begins. As a first approximation, in the program it was reasonably assumed that for the entire duration of the aforementioned cycle the PLL maintains the lock;
• nella fase F4 viene acquisito il valore di fvco e, • in phase F4 the value of fvco is acquired and,
nella successiva fase F5, il valore acquisito viene confrontato con il valore f o. tt memorizzato, ottenendo il segnale errore E; in the subsequent phase F5, the acquired value is compared with the value f o. tt stored, obtaining the error signal E;
• nella fase F6 si confronta il valore assoluto dell'errore E con un valore positivo Emin, piccolo abbastanza da poter considerare il valore della frequenza della portante ricostruita praticamente uguale al valore ottimo. Se in questa fase il valore assoluto dell'errore E supera Emin occorre correggere la tensione Vdro; • in phase F6 the absolute value of the error E is compared with a positive value Emin, small enough to consider the value of the frequency of the reconstructed carrier practically equal to the optimum value. If in this phase the absolute value of the error E exceeds Emin, the voltage Vdro must be corrected;
• nella fase F7 viene calcolato un incremento AV da apportare alla tensione Vdro. In conformità alla strategia utilizzata per correggere Vdro, l'incremento AV risulterà una opportuna funzione dell'errore E. La funzione prescelta è di forma molto semplice, e cioè: AV(E) = ±sign(E) = ±1, il valore unitario corrispondendo al bit meno significativo della parola che rappresenta digitalmente la tensione Vdro. La scelta del segno o - della funzione AV(E) dipende dalla relazione che sussiste tra Vdro e fvco, in ogni caso la correzione apportata a Vdro deve comportare una diminuzione del valore assoluto dell'errore E. La piccola entità della correzione apportata ha il vantaggio di una maggior precisione, per contro in caso di rapide e consistenti variazioni di f|0r costringerebbe a molteplici iterazioni del ciclo, tuttavia questa eventualità non è mai generata da fenomeni di deriva termica e invecchiamento, che sono per loro natura molto lenti; • in phase F7 an increase AV is calculated to be applied to the voltage Vdro. In accordance with the strategy used to correct Vdro, the AV increase will be an appropriate function of the error E. The function chosen is of a very simple form, namely: AV (E) = ± sign (E) = ± 1, the value unitary corresponding to the least significant bit of the word that digitally represents the voltage Vdro. The choice of the sign o - of the function AV (E) depends on the relationship that exists between Vdro and fvco, in any case the correction made to Vdro must lead to a decrease in the absolute value of the error E. The small amount of the correction made has the advantage of greater precision, on the other hand in case of rapid and consistent variations of f | 0r it would force multiple iterations of the cycle, however this eventuality is never generated by phenomena of thermal drift and aging, which are by their very nature very slow;
• nella fase F8 l’incremento AV viene sommato algebricamente alla tensione Vdro ed il programma ritorna nella fase F4 per compiere un'altra iterazione del ciclo di ottimizzazione; • in phase F8 the AV increase is algebraically added to the voltage Vdro and the program returns to phase F4 to perform another iteration of the optimization cycle;
• if in phase F6 of said iteration the modulus of the error E is lower than Emin, it means that the overall correction made to the local oscillator frequency fo (r is sufficient, in this case the processing concerning the Start condition ends and starts the one that concerns the condition of Normality. Before continuing with the illustration of the program, it is advisable to make some considerations on the timings of the various operations performed so far. More precisely, the locking cycle constituted by the indefinite repetition of phases F2 and F3 has the duration of The length of its duration is a consequence of the impossibility of subjecting the demodulator PLL to a 4 MHz wide frequency sweep in too short a time compared to the typical engagement times of the PLL, because otherwise the hooking capacity of the same As far as the stabilization cycle of the folr is concerned, the duration of each iteration is about 80 ms, corresponding to double the frequency measurement interval fvc0 Overall, the two cycles examined so far require several seconds of processing, however this does not affect the characteristics of the transceiver in fig. 2 since this wait is only necessary during the start-up phase of the apparatus and after a long persistence (in the order of a few minutes) of the LOF alarm.
L'elaborazione che concerne la condizione di Normalità comprende tutte le ulteriori fasi ad eccezione delle fasi F10 e F12 che appartengono alla condizione di Allarme, mentre le fasi F9 e F11 appartengono ad ambedue le suddette condizioni. • Riprendendo dalla fase F6, il programma attraversa inizialmente la fase F9 nella direzione del no; The processing that concerns the Normal condition includes all the further phases with the exception of phases F10 and F12 which belong to the Alarm condition, while phases F9 and F11 belong to both of the aforementioned conditions. • Resuming from phase F6, the program initially passes through phase F9 in the direction of no;
• viene quindi eseguito nella fase F11 un test sull'allarme LOF, la cui presenza conduce il programma nella condizione di Allarme abbandonando la condizione di Normalità; • a test on the LOF alarm is then performed in phase F11, the presence of which leads the program to the Alarm condition leaving the Normal condition;
• in assenza di LOF viene azzerato un contatore COUNT in F13, operazione che ha rilevanza solo dopo il rientro in condizione di Normalità da una preesistente condizione di Allarme; • in the absence of LOF, a COUNT counter is reset in F13, an operation which is relevant only after returning to the Normal condition from a pre-existing Alarm condition;
• viene quindi eseguita la fase F14, identica alla F4, per l’acquisizione di fvco, • a cui segue la fase F15, identica alla F5, per la determinazione dell'errore E; • phase F14 is then performed, identical to F4, for the acquisition of fvco, • followed by phase F15, identical to F5, for the determination of error E;
• il programma entra quindi nella fase F16 in cui il valore assoluto dell'errore E, calcolato in F15, viene confrontato con una soglia positiva SEM > Emjn al disotto della quale nessuna azione viene intrapresa per riportare l'errore E ad un valore inferiore ad Emjn. La soglia SEM rappresenta l'errore E generato da uno scostamento, in più o in meno, di 1000 ppm (parti per milione) nel valore della portante a frequenza intermerdia fj rispetto al valore nominale di 70 MHz; in sostanza lo scostamento tollerato è di ±70 KHz; • the program then enters phase F16 in which the absolute value of the error E, calculated in F15, is compared with a positive threshold SEM> Emjn below which no action is taken to bring the error E back to a value lower than Emjn. The SEM threshold represents the error E generated by a deviation, more or less, of 1000 ppm (parts per million) in the value of the carrier at intermediate frequency fj with respect to the nominal value of 70 MHz; essentially the tolerated deviation is ± 70 KHz;
se in F16 il valore assoluto dell'errore E risulta inferiore o uguale alla soglia SEM, significa che esso è tollerabile; in tal caso il programma ritorna in F9 e ripete indefinitamente il ciclo precedente costituito dalle fasi F9, F11 , F13, F14, F15 ed F16 in cui la frequenza fvco viene monitorata in continuazione. Il test sulla presenza dell'allarme LOF eseguito in F11 consente di monitorare con continuità lo stato di aggancio, o sgancio, del PLL compreso nel demodulatore 11 per tutta la durata della condizione di Normalità; if in F16 the absolute value of the error E is lower than or equal to the SEM threshold, it means that it is tolerable; in this case the program returns to F9 and indefinitely repeats the previous cycle consisting of phases F9, F11, F13, F14, F15 and F16 in which the fvco frequency is continuously monitored. The test on the presence of the LOF alarm carried out in F11 allows to continuously monitor the latching or release status of the PLL included in the demodulator 11 for the entire duration of the Normal condition;
• if in F16 it appears that the fvco frequency has deviated significantly from the fott value, an error reset cycle E is performed which includes phases F17, F18, F19, F20 and F21, completely identical to the initial frequency optimization cycle folr consisting of phases F4, F5, F6, F7 and F8, after which you return to Normal in F9. The aforesaid zeroing cycle allows the centering of the intermediate frequency carrier fj at the value of 70 MHz without generating any error on the data flow; this is possible thanks to the sufficient bandwidth of the PLL that allows to absorb the frequency jumps fj caused by the shift of the fol frequency r As a consequence of the fact that the frequency jumps fj can also be caused by variations in the transmission radio frequency carrier, it is deduces that also in this case the carrier fj is centered at the value of 70 MHz, neutralizing the frequency instabilities of the transmitter.
• Tornando al test compiuto in F11, se ivi risulta la presenza di allarme LOF, il programma entra nella condizione di Allarme, ed in F12 incrementa di una unità il contenuto del contatore COUNT che prima era nullo. Come già era stato detto, la causa principale che determina la generazione dell'allarme LOF è la perdita di aggancio del PLL del demodulatore 11, anche per motivi non necessariamente dipendenti dal funzionamento del DRO 10; • Returning to the test performed in F11, if the LOF alarm is present there, the program enters the Alarm condition, and in F12 it increases the content of the COUNT counter by one unit, which was previously null. As already said, the main cause that determines the generation of the LOF alarm is the loss of locking of the PLL of the demodulator 11, also for reasons not necessarily dependent on the operation of the DRO 10;
• nella successiva fase F9 del ciclo di allarme, costituito dalle fasi F9, F11, ed F12 viene compiuto un test sul contenuto di COUNT per verificare se è stato superato un valore massimo COUNTMAX atto a stabilire la massima durata del suddetto ciclo, durata che è tipicamente nell'ordine di qualche minuto; • in the subsequent phase F9 of the alarm cycle, consisting of phases F9, F11, and F12, a test is carried out on the COUNT content to verify whether a maximum COUNTMAX value has been exceeded, suitable for establishing the maximum duration of the aforementioned cycle, duration which is typically in the order of a few minutes;
• se in F9 la condizione è verificata il ciclo di allarme termina e viene azzerato il contenuto di COUNT in F10, dopodiché il programma ritorna in F2 per la ripetizione delle elaborazioni che riguardano la condizione di Avvio. Ciò è reso necessario in quanto, malgrado il tempo di attesa sia scaduto, il PLL non è ancora riuscito a ricuperare l'aggancio; • if the condition is verified in F9, the alarm cycle ends and the content of COUNT in F10 is reset, after which the program returns to F2 to repeat the processing relating to the Start condition. This is necessary because, despite the waiting time has expired, the PLL has not yet managed to recover the lock;
• if, on the other hand, in F9 the condition is not verified, it means that the waiting time has not ended, in this case the test on the presence of the LOF alarm carried out in the subsequent phase F11 gives rise to the possibility of a premature exit from the alarm cycle and a return to the condition of Normality with zeroing of COUNT, since at the same time the PLL has managed to recover the aggahcib.
For what has been said, the alarm cycle is only a verification of the persistence of the LOF alarm, possibly carried out during the execution of the Normal phase. It was introduced to prevent the PROC microprocessor from shifting the folr frequency even in cases where the LOF alarm condition is caused by phenomena independent of thermal drift or aging of the local oscillator 10.
Although the invention has been described with particular reference to a preferred embodiment, it is not to be considered limited to the latter, but extends to cover all the obvious variations and modifications that will be evident to the skilled in the art.
