L'elevato automatismo raggiunto ormai da numerosi impianti e macchinari, anche dei settori industriali più tradizionali, fa sì che tali impianti siano spesso controllati dall'elettronica per mezzo di software specifici. I tecnici che devono intervenire su tali macchinari, apparati o dispositivi, si trovano quindi spesso a dover lavorare nelle officine, nei capannoni e più in generale nei reparti produttivi delle fabbriche o delle aziende, o ed hanno l'esigenza di utilizzare il loro notebook e in alcuni casi di connettere il notebook stesso ai macchinari o apparati in luoghi in cui non vi è un piano di appoggio confacente alle loro esigenze.
