TITOLO TITLE
NUOVO PROCESSO DI TINTURA DEL PELLAME NEW LEATHER DYEING PROCESS
CON COLORANTI NATURALI WITH NATURAL DYES
DESCRIZIONE DESCRIPTION
Campo dell’Invenzione Field of the Invention
The present invention generally relates to the tanning field, and more precisely it refers to a new process of dyeing leather with natural dyes, completely free from metals, which optimally combines the needs of environmental health and safety with the aesthetic and functional characteristics. requests to leathers thanks to the use of compounds as seaming agents never used up to now in this sector.
Stato dell’Arte State of the art
It is known that the tanning process consists in the transformation of a raw hide into a finished commodity article, through numerous phases in order to guarantee, first of all, the non-putrescibility of the product and then to impart the required characteristics of flexibility, softness and also of coloring. One of the last stages of the tanning process is the dyeing.
Frequently, both the tanning to make the material rot-proof, and the actual dyeing phase of the tanned leather, are carried out with chemical products containing metals. We recall the use of chromium in the tanning phase called "chrome tanning" which, thanks also to its cheapness and speed, is still an extremely widespread procedure. Even the dyeing phase traditionally involves the use of organometallic dyes, or in any case synthetic dyes with a strong impact on the environment and health.
However, the increasingly strong ecological sensitivity has also spread to the tanning sector, where great efforts have been made in the last twenty years to create more and more natural products and develop environmentally friendly processes, which produce less waste and consequently less pollution. The continuous evolution of industry legislation has also contributed to this, requiring the development of products and processes that meet increasingly stringent requirements both in terms of environmental protection and in terms of health and safety of industrial processing workers.
In this panorama, perhaps the only phase of the entire tanning process in which synthetic products continue to be widely used is dyeing, in which the natural dyes known to date have found only a marginal use for the production of particular articles, while synthetic organic dyes are currently the most used for their excellent results in terms of color up-take, fastness and resistance to rubbing, both dry and wet. In fact, the synthetic organic dyes, thanks to their molecular structure, are able to anchor themselves stably to the collagen of the skins through the formation of ionic bonds, giving stable and resistant colors.
Natural dyes, both of animal and vegetable origin, are organic compounds that can be identified in various categories according to their chemical structure, such as for example Indigoids, Polyphenols, Quinones, and Carotenoids; unlike synthetic dyes, they have a poor ability to penetrate the leather and to fix themselves to this type of substrate in a stable manner, with consequent poor results in terms of solidity of the color obtained, stability and resistance to physical agents and chemists. If in recent years the natural dye has found an increasingly widespread use on fabrics, since the coloring obtained has a satisfactory quality and resistance, for leather the situation is completely different, being by its nature a very particular substrate and being the coloring closely linked to the possible interactions between substrate and dye.
For this reason, today, when natural dyes are used in the dyeing of the leather, the so-called "mordants" are also added, auxiliary agents generally consisting of heavy metal salts which, dissolved in water, are adsorbed by the proteins of the skin remaining bound to it permanently through very strong chemical bonds. It is at this point that the natural dye, penetrating into the fibers, binds to the mordant anchored in turn to the skin proteins. Thanks to the strong interaction between dye and substrate, mediated by the mordant, it is thus possible to obtain a good resistance and solidity of the coloring. In addition to the mordant, to optimize color fixation and improve coloring, for example in terms of uniformity, additional auxiliary agents are usually added, which are chemical compounds with functional groups capable of stably fixing to the skin. Both these auxiliary agents and above all the mordants are chemical compounds with a strong environmental impact; therefore, if on the one hand they improve the quality of coloring with natural dyes, on the other hand they completely cancel their benefits, being in turn substances that are harmful to human safety and the environment.
In light of the above, it is evident that the technical problem of having a truly natural tanning process in all its phases, which however maintains the quality of the final product high, including the aesthetic and functional characteristics of the coloring, is still very much felt. and unresolved as far as the Applicant is aware.
Sommario dell'invenzione Summary of the invention
Other important features of the process of the invention are reported in the following detailed description.
Descrizione dettagliata dell'invenzione Detailed description of the invention
The present leather dyeing process provides a first phase in which the natural dye is used to prepare an aqueous dye bath in which the leather is immersed, according to operating conditions typically used in the natural dyeing of the leather. An amount of dye comprised for example between 0.2 and 30% by weight with respect to the weight of the leather to be treated is added in a special drum to a quantity of water which varies, for example, between 50 and 400% by weight with respect to the weight of the leather, at a temperature for example between 10 and 70 ° C, and preferably between 35 and 50 ° C. This first phase can last between 1 and 6 hours in which the leather is kept in the dye bath.
In a second step of the present process, one or more compounds of formula (I) in combination with each other, are added to the leather to be treated immersed in the dye bath prepared as described above, or in another bath in which the leather can be immersed after a first step in the main dye bath. It is an essential condition of this process that the seaming agent is added to the leather in the dye bath or in any case after immersion in the dye bath. According to a preferred embodiment of the present process, the compounds of formula (I) are added to the dye bath in already hydrolyzed form: therefore, in a second step of the process, an aqueous solution of the compound (I) is prepared under stirring using ad for example an amount of compound (I) comprised between 0.1 and 50% by weight, preferably between 2 and 30%, with an amount of water comprised between 100 and 500% by weight with respect to the weight of the leather to be treated. Particularly preferred is an embodiment of the present process in which the amount of compound (I) used is between 3 and 10%, preferably 5% by weight with respect to the weight of the leather to be treated. Depending on the acid, basic or neutral nature of the compound of formula (I), small quantities of acids or bases are preferably added to its aqueous solution or dispersion to bring the pH in the range between 3 and 8; in this way the hydrolysis of the compound is complete and its effectiveness as a seaming agent in the present dyeing process is better. Dispersing agents and / or further products commonly used in the field as dyeing auxiliaries can also be added to the aqueous formulation thus obtained.
The compounds of formula (I) according to the invention, in addition to having by their nature and the modest quantities used a practically zero degree of danger and a reduced environmental impact, are stable, non-volatile compounds, easily soluble or dispersible in water without the use of any surfactant or solvent other than water. ESEMPI EXAMPLES
In a dyeing drum of suitable size containing the leather to be dyed, already tanned with metal free tanning, water and camping wood extract were added in amounts of 5% and 150% by weight respectively with respect to the weight of the leather to be treated. , bringing the temperature to 45 ° C and maintaining the conditions for at least 2 hours.
An aqueous solution of 3-glycidoxymethoxysilane was then prepared, under stirring, with the silane in a measure of 5% by weight with respect to the weight of the leather to be treated and water in a measure of 150% by weight. A 70% formic acid solution is then added until the pH value drops below 4. The solution thus obtained is added to the dye bath and kept under stirring at 30 ° C for 1 hour.
At the end of the treatment, the leather is washed with water and dried according to the commonly used procedures.
The product thus obtained was compared with the same type of leather, colored with the same camping wood extract without, however, the addition of the seaming agent of the invention, thus being able to highlight the superiority of the finished product obtained with the process of the invention both in terms of brilliance and uniformity of coloring and in terms of solidity and resistance to wear.
