Il dispositivo ? stato ideato per permettere l'azionamento di ogni singola valvola in Motori a Combustione Interna indipendentemente dalla legge di alzata di tutte le altre valvole, tramite comando elettrico proveniente da un relativo circuito di gestione. In condizioni normali (assenza di corrente nell'avvolgimento di FMM) il campo magnetico generato dal MP induce nel nucleo ad alta permeabilit? un campo magnetico dello stesso verso del magnete, cosicch? la forza meccanica complessiva (derivante dall' equilibrio ottenuto considerando anche le reazioni elastiche delle molle) agente sull'ancora ? attrattiva, e la valvola rimane chiusa. La funzione dell'avvolgimento di FMM risiede nell' inversione della forza meccanica tramite passaggio di corrente nelle spire della bobina, avvolte in maniera tale da generare nella zona del nucleo ad alta permeabilit? un campo magnetico avente verso opposto al campo del MP, causando l'apertura della valvola; i tempi di inizio e mantenimento dell'alimentazione elettrica dell'avvolgimento dipendono dal regime e dal carico motore. Togliendo l'alimentazione all'avvolgimento di FMM. grazie alla calibratura dei precarichi e delle rigidezze delle molle di contrasto, la valvola ritorna nella propria sede con legge di moto speculare rispetto alla fase di apertura. L'impiego di un fluido MR al posto dell'aria consente di minimizzare la riluttanza del traferro permettendo di avere una forza meccanica agente sulla valvola poco variabile passando dalla condizione di traferro minimo (valvola chiusa) a quella di traferro massimo (alzata max). La presenza di un MP nel circuito ? invece causa di una elevata riluttanza di base ma anche di una altrettanto alta FMMMP dovuta al prodotto della forza coercitiva intrinseca del MP per la sua lunghezza.
