Il continuo miglioramento delle strade e dei veicoli, anche con l'installazione di cinture di sicurezza e di air-bag, ha consentito di abbassare notevolmente, negli ultimi anni, la mortalità’ a seguito di incidenti stradali. I diversi tentativi di controllo preventivo della capacita’ di guida dei conducenti, si sono concretizzati in pratica con l'adozione di un solo strumento per il controllo dello stato di ebrezza del conducente (etilometro), oggi utilizzato dalle forze di polizia. Una verifica sul campo dell’efficienza di una simile apparecchiatura, potrebbe portare, in futuro, alla sua installazione direttamente a bordo (cosi’ come e' avvenuto per le cinture di sicurezza o per il cronotachigrafo) in modo che, con opportuna procedura, il conducente sia obbligato ad un autotest periodico (per esempio alla partenza ed ogni ora successiva di guida) con l'obbligo di sospendere il viaggio in caso di test negativo. Altro vantaggio e’ che l’apparecchiatura, completamente automatica, e’ in grado di istruire (guidare) il soggetto in modo vocale, per tutte le fasi della prova, in modo impersonale ed omogeneo per tutti.
