Description
Procedimento per la trasformazione di fanghi di cartiera in prodotti rivendibili sul mercato Process for the transformation of paper sludge into products that can be resold on the market
The present invention relates to a process for converting paper mill sludge into products that can be resold on the market.
The invention refers to the field of circular economy applied to paper mills, to allow the reuse and recycling of waste materials and products from the paper process, through their transformation into products that can be resold on the market, thus extending the life cycle of the products and helping to minimize waste production.
? It is known that paper mill sludge is production waste, derived from the paper process, consisting essentially of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and cellulose, plus? possibly other filler substances present in smaller quantities, such as kaolin, titanium dioxide and others.
Currently, the waste produced by paper mills, called paper mill sludge, which amounts to many thousands of tons per year only in the portion of territory between the provinces of Lucca and Pistoia, constitutes an enormous problem<1 >both of an economic, for the costs of disposal sustained by the enterprises of the sector, both ecological, since, for their treatment, essentially two solutions have been foreseen, cio? the landfill and the incinerator <2>. These two solutions have the disadvantage of not being environmentally sustainable<3 >and of not allowing the recovery of the substances contained in the waste, which can be reused in a circular economy context, as cellulose is present in the paper mill sludge and mineral fillers, what ? possible to recover. For this reason, paper mill sludge should not be confused with pulper waste, which derives from the cleaning process of waste paper and mainly consists of plastic materials. Conferring sludge to the incinerator or landfill therefore constitutes a waste of raw material and resources.
To date, the solutions found other than incineration or landfilling are extremely limited. According to a process of the prior art, ? the reuse of paper mill sludge as a daily insulating cover for solid urban waste landfills is foreseen<4>, but this procedure does not allow the recovery and reuse (or resale) of the substances contained in the sludge, therefore it does not solve the problem of waste cellulose and fillers.
In this context the solution according to the present invention comes into its own, which proposes to provide the transformation of these production scraps, which are a non-hazardous special waste which involves high disposal costs, into products that can be resold on the market, by means of a chemical process adaptable according to the type of sludge treated.
Purpose of the present invention? then that of providing a process for transforming paper mill sludge into products that can be resold on the market which allows the limitations of the processes according to the known technology to be overcome and the technical results described above to be obtained.
Another purpose of the invention? that said process can be carried out with substantially low costs, both as regards start-up costs and as regards management costs.
Not the last purpose of the invention? that of proposing a procedure for the transformation of paper sludge into products that can be resold on the market which is simple, safe and reliable.
Therefore, the specific object of the present invention is a process for transforming paper mill sludge into products that can be resold on the market, in which said paper mill sludge comprises inorganic salts and the process comprises the following steps:
a) trattamento dei fanghi di cartiera con una soluzione acquosa di un acido minerale, per ottenere la separazione della cellulosa, la sostituzione della componente anionica dei sali inorganici con la componente anionica di detto acido minerale, la formazione di diossido di carbonio; a) treatment of the paper mill sludge with an aqueous solution of a mineral acid, to obtain the separation of the cellulose, the replacement of the anionic component of the inorganic salts with the anionic component of said mineral acid, the formation of carbon dioxide;
b) lavaggio della cellulosa ottenuta nella fase a) per ottenere cellulosa rivitalizzata da riutilizzare in cartiera o da inviare a produzione di nano-cellulosa; e c) trattamento del diossido di carbonio con carbonato di sodio per ottenere bicarbonato di sodio. b) washing of the cellulose obtained in phase a) to obtain revitalized cellulose to be reused in the paper mill or to be sent to nano-cellulose production; and c) treating the carbon dioxide with sodium carbonate to obtain sodium bicarbonate.
In particular, according to the present invention, said inorganic salts comprise calcium carbonate and said mineral acid ? hydrochloric acid, and by replacing the anionic component of calcium carbonate with the anionic component of hydrochloric acid, calcium chloride is obtained.
Alternatively, still according to the present invention, said mineral acid ? sulfuric acid, and by replacing the anionic component of calcium carbonate with the anionic component of sulfuric acid, calcium sulphate is obtained.
Preferably, according to the invention, said calcium sulphate is treated with ion exchange resins to regenerate sulfuric acid and said ion exchange resins are subsequently regenerated by addition of hydrochloric acid, with further regeneration of sulfuric acid and formation of calcium chloride.
Still according to the present invention, before being packaged, the calcium chloride is further subjected to drying.
In particular, according to the invention, in the event that the sludge to be treated has a high lignin content, such as for example in the case where the paper mill sludge derives from a production process which uses pulp for the production of paper, before said phase a) ? the following preliminary phase is foreseen:
a0) trattamento a caldo dei fanghi di cartiera con una soluzione acquosa di NaOH. a0) hot treatment of the paper sludge with an aqueous solution of NaOH.
Preferibilmente, secondo l?invenzione, in questi casi detta fase a0) ? suddivisa nelle seguenti sottofasi: a01) aggiunta ai fanghi di cartiera di una soluzione di NaOH in acqua deionizzata, ad una temperatura compresa tra 50 e 100?C, per ottenere la formazione di black liquor contenente lignina; Preferably, according to the invention, in these cases said phase a0) ? divided into the following sub-phases: a01) addition to the paper mill sludge of a solution of NaOH in deionized water, at a temperature ranging from 50 to 100°C, to obtain the formation of black liquor containing lignin;
a02) separazione del black liquor dai fanghi trattati; a02) separation of the black liquor from the treated sludge;
a03) filtrazione e lavaggio dei fanghi trattati. Infine, secondo la presente invenzione, detta sottofase a03) di filtrazione e lavaggio dei fanghi trattati comprende preferibilmente il lavaggio dei fanghi trattati con una soluzione di HCl al 10% in acqua deionizzata. a03) filtration and washing of the treated sludge. Finally, according to the present invention, said sub-phase a03) of filtration and washing of the treated sludge preferably comprises the washing of the treated sludge with a 10% HCl solution in deionized water.
The effectiveness of the process of the present invention is evident, which allows the recovery and reuse of the substances contained in the sludge, since the cellulose can be transformed into nanocellulose and the inorganic salts they contain, such as calcium carbonate (CaCO3), can be converted into other salts or products that can be resold on the market, such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3).
Furthermore, the process according to the present invention entails considerable savings for the companies, particularly as regards the costs of disposing of the sludge produced in the process.
Again, the process according to the present invention has an advantage at an environmental level, in that there is a clear reduction in the quantity of waste destined for the landfill or incinerator, since are transformed into secondary raw materials and reused.
The invention will come described below for illustrative, but non-limiting purposes, with particular reference to some illustrative examples.
In general, the solution according to the present invention relates to a process for transforming paper mill sludge into products that can be resold on the market, by means of a chemical process that can be adapted according to the type of sludge treated. The process according to the present invention provides for a first phase of treatment of the sludge with a mineral acid (sulfuric acid, H2SO4, or hydrochloric acid, HCl) at a variable concentration, to obtain the separation of the cellulose and the transformation of the inorganic salts contained in the sludge, into in particular calcium carbonate, CaCO3, in salts or commercially resalable products, such as calcium chloride (CaCl2), calcium sulphate dihydrate or gypsum (CaSO4<.>2H2O) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). The calcium carbonate contained in the sludge can be transformed into CaCl2 with the production of carbon dioxide, CO2, which can? react with sodium carbonate (NaCO3) to form sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). This operation ? economically advantageous as the baking soda can? be sold at a higher price than soda ash. The remaining cellulose can in turn be transformed into nano-cellulose, or pu? be reused in the paper mill.
Pi? in particular, in the event that the paper mill sludge derives from a production process that uses pulp for the production of paper, i.e. when muds with a high content of lignin are used, the procedure can? provide for a preliminary treatment which consists in treating, depending on the lignin concentration, the waste material with a NaOH solution to eliminate the lignin contained. In this embodiment, the sludge treatment with the addition of an acid is carried out with H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) of varying concentration, which reacts with CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) to form calcium sulfate dihydrate, also called gypsum (CaSO4?2H2O). Both cellulose and gypsum (CaSO4?2H2O), are insoluble in water, therefore ? necessary to separate them by mechanical means, exploiting the difference in specific weight between the two materials. Once the cellulose has been separated from the gypsum, the suspension containing gypsum is sent to ion exchange resins, where the regeneration of the sulfuric acid used in the process and the transformation of the gypsum into CaCl2, calcium chloride, takes place. The reaction of calcium carbonate with sulfuric acid produces, in addition to gypsum, also CO2, which is recovered and reacted with Na2CO3 (sodium carbonate), to form NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate), which can be sold at a higher price than soda ash. The cellulose recovered from the previous phase is washed and, depending on the quality? of the product obtained, pu? be converted into nano-cellulose or reused in the paper mill. Not ? mandatory to use sulfuric acid to eliminate calcium carbonate; ? is it possible to use a solution, the concentration of which can? be variable, of hydrochloric acid (HCl), which transforms the calcium carbonate into calcium chloride (CaCl2). This procedure can be more advantageous, as the calcium chloride, unlike plaster,? soluble in water and is separated more? easily from cellulose. Furthermore, with this procedure it is not ? It is necessary to install an ion exchange resin system to regenerate the sulfuric acid and calcium chloride is produced directly.
The first step of the process according to the first embodiment consists in treating the paper mill sludge with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), which reacts with calcium carbonate (CaCO3), forming gypsum<5>(CaSO4?2H2O) and CO2, by the following reaction:
(1) Il gesso (CaSO4?2H2O) cos? prodotto pu? essere venduto tal quale oppure pu? essere eliminato mediante l?utilizzo di resine a scambio ionico, nelle quali avvengono le seguenti reazioni<6>: (1) Gypsum (CaSO4?2H2O) cos? product can? be sold as such or can? be eliminated through the use of ion exchange resins, in which the following reactions take place <6>:
(2) con rigenerazione di acido solforico, che pu? essere riutilizzato, e l?altra reazione, di rigenerazione della resina: (2) with regeneration of sulfuric acid, which can? be reused, and the other reaction, of regeneration of the resin:
The addition of HCl (hydrochloric acid), restores the resin, which can? what? go back to react with other chalk, producing more sulfuric acid, which can? be reused in the process, without having to buy it all the time. Calcium chloride, CaCl2, is also formed, which is very cold soluble, is expelled with washing and pu? be resold. As for the CO2 produced by the reaction with sulfuric acid, it reacts with sodium carbonate to form sodium bicarbonate, according to the reaction<7>:
In this way, all the CO2 produced? incorporated in the NaHCO3 molecule (sodium bicarbonate), avoiding its dispersion in the environment. Sodium bicarbonate, after what? precipitated, it is collected and stored before being sold. Alternatively, CO2 can be liquefied.
As for the cellulose, depending on the type of sludge treated, after being separated from the plaster and washed, it can be started at the production plant of nano-cellulose or pu? be recovered and reused in the paper mill. The production of nano-cellulose can be made according to solutions already? Note. Alternatively, according to the prior art, it is possible use a conventional treatment with sulfuric acid<8>, which for? requires procedures more? complex<9>, or treatments, recently proposed, which use ball mills, can be used for the production of nanocellulose<10>. With this last solution, the reaction times are more? short and using smaller quantities of mineral acids <11>.
In the event that sludges derived from the use of waste paper are used, generally these are not suitable for the production of nano-cellulose and contain high quantities of lignin <12>, so it can be attempt to reuse them in the paper mill, through a process of "revitalization", which includes the following phases:
a) eliminazione della lignina mediante trattamento chimico a caldo<13 >(circa 100 ?C) con NaOH, con formazione di black liquor, che deve essere smaltito; a) elimination of lignin by hot chemical treatment <13 > (about 100 ?C) with NaOH, with the formation of black liquor, which must be disposed of;
b) una volta trattati con NaOH, i fanghi devono essere filtrati, lavati e messi in un?altra tina, alla quale sar? aggiunta acqua; b) once treated with NaOH, the sludge must be filtered, washed and placed in another vat, to which it will be? added water;
c) successivamente si aggiunge acido solforico (o cloridrico) e si procede al recupero del gesso (o del cloruro di calcio) utilizzando le procedure sopra descritte, mentre la cellulosa, ormai priva di carbonato di calcio e rivitalizzata, ? pronta per essere rimandata in cartiera, per riutilizzarla. c) subsequently sulfuric (or hydrochloric) acid is added and the gypsum (or calcium chloride) is recovered using the procedures described above, while the cellulose, now deprived of calcium carbonate and revitalized, is ready to be sent back to the paper mill, to be reused.
However, it must be considered that the fibers used in the production of paper from waste are already been recycled many times, so when they are recovered from the sludge, they are often unusable, as they are too worn and are no longer? capable of absorbing chemicals needed in the papermaking process. In fact, the fibers can be recycled a maximum of 5 or 6 times, after which? I'm not anymore reactive and become unusable.
In the event that the lignin content in the sludge is low, as usually happens with sludge from production cycles in which virgin cellulose is used, and not deriving from the use of waste paper as raw material, it is not? It is necessary to pre-treat the sludge with caustic soda (NaOH) to remove excess lignin. In this case, the process consists in treating the paper mill sludge with mineral acids, which can be both HCl (hydrochloric acid) and H2SO4, sulfuric acid. If HCl is used, the CaCO3 is immediately eliminated in the form of CaCl2. The CaCl2 solution formed? dried to form CaCl2 crystals, which are stored in bags and sold. In case you decide to use H2SO4, CaCO3 is immediately eliminated in the form of gypsum. In both cases, the cellulose that remains can be sent back to the paper mill, or pu? be treated to produce nano-cellulose, according to the same modalities? already described previously. The CO2 released from the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is reacted with Na2CO3 (sodium carbonate) to produce NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate), which is sold, or can be liquefied.
Esempio 1 Example 1
2g of paper mill sludge with a high calcium carbonate content, deriving from the use of waste paper, was ground and subsequently treated with 2g of NaOH and reacted, at a temperature of 50?C, in a 250mL beaker , with 200mL of deionized water, to eliminate the lignin contained in them. This reaction? duration about half an hour; the speed? of rotation ? been set in a range between 900 and 1300rpm. Once the lignin was removed, the sludge was rinsed with 50mL of a 10% HCl solution in 100mL of deionized water. The rotation? been set on 1300rpm and the reaction ? lasting about 5 minutes. Subsequently, the fibrous suspension ? was treated with 20mL of approximately 60% H2SO4. The rotation? been set in a range between 900 and 1300rpm. The fibrous suspension obtained ? been observed under the microscope, to verify the possible presence of alterations of the cellulosic fibers caused by a prolonged acid treatment.

2g of newspaper and 2g of magazines were added to 200mL of deionized H2O. To whiten the dough, 20mL of 35% H2O2 (130 volume) was added. Subsequently, ? About half, in litres, of the mixture was taken. Yes ? chosen to subject only a part of the dough to treatment in order to observe any differences between treated fibers and untreated fibers. The part of the dough that ? been picked up? was then treated with 20mL of 10% HCl for about half an hour. Afterwards, the suspension? was filtered, washed and then placed in a beaker, in which 100 mL of deionized H2O were added. Then, after bringing the temperature to about 50°C, 10 mL of a previously prepared 60% H2SO4 solution were added. The reaction ? been made to last for a little more? of two hours. The cellulosic fibers obtained were filtered and analyzed under a microscope to compare them with the untreated fibers and to verify the degree of hydrolysis of the fibers themselves.
Esempio 3 Example 3
Were taken 10g of virgin cellulose and ? A suspension was prepared in approximately 600mL of deionized water. Of these, 300mL of suspension (about 5g) was taken and placed in a 1L beaker. After heating to 50°C, 70mL of a 96% H2SO4 solution was added. The reaction ? duration about 3 hours. The next day, the treatment ? been repeated to verify if the resulting cellulose production was more? effective. In particular, 55 mL of 96% H2SO4 were added after bringing the temperature of the solution to 50?C. The reaction ? duration for about 3 and a half hours. Subsequently, the fibers were analyzed under a microscope to determine if ? occurred or not the hydrolysis of cellulose. This analysis? served to verify whether the cellulose fibers were actually attacked due to the double acid treatment. There? has a certain importance, since? for the production of nanocellulose ? It is important to check that the fiber has been correctly hydrolysed by the acid used.
