Description
Titolo: Stampante laser per vetrini istologici e citologici. Title: Laser printer for histological and cytological slides.
Descrizione Description
Campo dell’invenzione Field of the invention
The present invention relates to the field of pathological anatomy, in particular the sector linked to the printing of codes on the slides that are used in hospital wards, and more specifically it concerns a printer for slides which allows the writing of 1D codes by means of a laser. - 2D (bar codes or datamatrix) and alphanumeric so as to allow, during the reading phase, the identification of the code printed on the slides by means of suitable readers.
Background dell’invenzione. Background of the invention.
At the state of the art it is known that a slide means a small plate, generally of glass, of indicative dimensions of 75 * 25 mm with a thickness of about 1 mm, on which a "slice" of histological section deriving from the treatment of a sample of fabric. Said “slice” is fixed on the glass slide by means of a second plate known as the cover-glass, having the function of covering the sample of biological material to be analyzed under the microscope.
At the state of the art it is also known that said slides, in order to be identified, are marked by identification codes which can be: - 1D or 2D (bar codes or datamatrix) or alphanumeric,
- con scritte fatte a mano con pennarelli con inchiostri indelebili, - with handwritten lettering with indelible ink markers,
- ottenuti con azione manuale con utensili elettrici a graffio, - stampati normalmente con trasferimento termico o altre tecnologie, - obtained by manual action with electric scratch tools, - usually printed with thermal transfer or other technologies,
- with writings made on labels then applied to the slide.
Said identification codes can therefore be printed with various methods, as described above, and the deposit of the "slice" occurs after the printing of the slide itself.
The most common method of printing slides is the one that involves the use of techniques based on thermal transfer, i.e. transferring, by exerting pressure on the face to be printed, by means of heads, ribbons and inks, the code to be written , previously set on the PC. The contrast exerted with pressure by the head on the slide can lead to rubbing with possible breakage of the slide itself which is very fragile, given its thin thickness.
The printers used are composed of known commercial heads and therefore use ribbons and inks which are consumables and which must be replaced according to the time the printer is used.
A disadvantage of the known printers is that, for the printing to be carried out on the slide, special indelible inks must be used which prove to be very expensive and which in any case, due to the effect of the various coloring processes (immersion in solvents or aggressive coloring liquids), in the over time they can discolour until they are erased.
Furthermore, the slides, after being mounted and analyzed, must, by law, be archived and stored for many years and time can accelerate the discoloration process.
The printing methods that consist in transferring the code by means of tapes and heads (as was the case for typewriters), which in any case provided for the writing of only alphanumeric codes, are now outdated. Due to the nature of the machine, normally not connected to a PC, these printers are not enabled to print barcodes or data matrixes.
The operator in pathological anatomy is generally in the conditions of having to manage a large quantity of slides and often has the need to identify them in a simple and rapid way, ensuring that the process takes place in compliance with the requirements of quality and certain traceability, and making so that the likelihood of making mistakes is minimal.
It is also known that the slides are placed in containers or baskets inside which are:
- o sovrapposti - or superimposed
- o alloggiati verticalmente l’uno sull’altro a contatto, - or housed vertically on top of each other in contact,
- or housed vertically in cavities (alveoli) that distance them from each other, therefore without direct contact, ensuring ease of insertion and removal of the slides from the containment alveoli.

According to a preferred - but not limiting - embodiment, the present invention relates to a printer (1) for writing in a simple, rapid and above all indelible way, 1D - 2D identification codes (bar codes or datamatrix) and alphanumeric codes on slides (2 ) histological and cytological.
Detta stampante (1) è composta da: This printer (1) is composed of:
- un laser di piccole dimensioni con potenza variabile tra 3 e 5 Watt costituito da: - a small laser with variable power between 3 and 5 Watts consisting of:
• una testa galvanometrica a scansione con sorgente YAG da 1064 n/mt; • a scanning galvanometric head with 1064 n / m YAG source;
• un risonatore; • a resonator;
• una lente focale (3) atta a determinare l’area di stampa e la distanza di stampa tra la lente (3) stessa e il vetrino (2); • a focal lens (3) designed to determine the print area and the print distance between the lens (3) itself and the slide (2);

- rulli di trascinamento (9). - drive rollers (9).
La stampante (1) oggetto della presente domanda di brevetto può stampare differenti tipologie di vetrini (2), quali: The printer (1) object of this patent application can print different types of slides (2), such as:
- standard slides, known in the state of the art, provided with colored band for writing; the laser of this printer (1) removes the paint shown on the slide (2) and the code is read by 1D - 2D readers in transparency on the removed paint (positive engraving).
- Standard slides, known in the state of the art, provided with colored band for writing; the laser of this printer (1) removes the paint in the outline of the code, leaving instead the one that defines it. Therefore said code can be read by 1D - 2D readers by reading in negative the code where the paint has remained.
- Slides, known in the state of the art, specially made to be lasered to increase the reading contrast, having a painted face in which the first layer is white and the substrate, placed below the white layer, is black paint; by focusing the laser of this printer (1), it removes the upper paint leaving the lower paint intact, generally black, creating an excellent reading contrast.
- Slides, known in the state of the art, having a painted face, usually white, and a substrate of black paint shown on the back of the slide; by focusing the laser of this printer (1) on the back of the slide (2), it removes the upper white paint leaving intact the black paint on the face behind it, creating an excellent reading contrast.
- Slides, known in the state of the art, equipped with specific laser strips placed in the back of the slides themselves; the laser beam, which passes the slide, hits the tape which, being in contact with the slide, transfers the black color of the tape to the back of said slide.
The printer (1) object of this patent application can operate in two different ways:
- manuale - manual
- automatica. - automatic.
In the case of a manual printer (1), there is the condition that each slide (2) is placed by an operator, precisely manually, on the guide (6). The sensor (8) for the presence of the slides (2) placed on the guide (6) has the task of creating a stop for the slide (2) itself; in other words, said slide (2) stops in the right position to be printed.
Once the printing operation is finished, the slide (2) is extracted from the guide (6) always manually.
In the case of a manual printer (1), the slide (2) is introduced from the outside towards the inside (as indicated by the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3).
In the case of an automatic printer (1), the slides (2) are placed in containers (5). The push actuator (4) has the task of advancing the slide (2) from the container (5) to the guide (6) and, once printed, again thanks to the same actuator (4), it is moved from the guide ( 6) to the container (7) passing through a series of drive rollers (9).
The container (7) is equipped with an inlet invitation profile (7a) (visible in Fig. 5) inclined to facilitate the entry of the slide (2).
Ogni volta che ciascun vetrino (2) viene stampato, il precedente vetrino (2) viene sollevato sopra l’ultimo vetrino (2) stampato. Each time each slide (2) is printed, the previous slide (2) is raised above the last slide (2) printed.
Alternatively, the slides (2), once printed, may not be collected inside the container (7), but simply dropped onto the base surface (10) of the printer (1).
Unlike the printer (1) with manual loading, in the case of automatic loading, the slides (2), as mentioned above, are placed inside the container (5) which is in turn positioned inside the printer (1) itself or, in an alternative embodiment, magazines (not shown) can be provided located to the right and left of the printer (1) itself; therefore it is clear that the direction of loading is from the inside to the outside.
Both in the case of manual and automatic printer (1), the laser works by engraving, because in this way any possibility of deleting the code is excluded with respect to systems known to the state of the art. The high durability of the print on the slide (2) is very important in consideration of the fact that current regulations require the archiving of the slides for ten years.
The laser of the printer (1), by means of a scanning galvanometric head and a focal lens (3) which determines the printing area, emits a series of micro-dots (high resolution) which engrave the painted part of the slide ( 2).
The laser printer (1) object of the present patent application can be used with containers of any size and is based on the fact of extracting one or more slides (2) from the container (5) at a time and introducing the printed slide (2) , one or more at a time, on the containers (7).
In any case, the number of containers (5, 7) of both the slides to be printed and those printed depends on the printing area of the focal lens (3). As can be seen in the figures attached to this patent application, two containers (5, 7) are depicted side by side, as the printing area of the focal lens (3) is able to cover two slides (2).
In addition, the thrust actuators (4) for both introduction and extraction are individual for each slide (2), allowing maximum freedom of choice. In the present patent application only one thrust actuator (4) is provided, but in an alternative embodiment, to speed up the printing process, the printer (1) can be equipped with a second actuator (4) positioned between the container (5) and the guide (6).
This printer (1) provides for the association to a printing management software of one or more slides (2), totally eliminating human error.
The materials and dimensions of the invention as described above, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed hereinafter, may be any according to requirements. Furthermore, all the details can be replaced with other technically equivalent ones, without thereby departing from the protective scope of the present patent application.
