L'avvolgimento della vela prodiera avviene a seguito della rotazione, tramite apposita cima, dell'avvolgifiocco a cui è agganciato tramite apposito golfare o similare l'angolo di mura della vela di prua, cioè l'angolo inferiore prodiero. A causa dell'installazione dell'avvolgifiocco e dell'aggancio dell'angolo di mura della vela quest'ultimo risulta innalzato dal piano di coperta innalzando in tale modo anche il centro di spinta della vela e soprattutto riducendo la portanza della vela stessa a causa del vento che sfugge tra la base rialzata della vela ed il piano di coperta. Per evitare gli inconvenienti sopra detti alcune barche hanno l'avvolgifiocco inserito in un vano all'interno della coperta in modo che la base della vela non risulti rialzata.
