Abstract

A tire (2) is tested to provide controlled break of its sidewall, by rotating the tire on a rotating drum (4) at predetermined speed, inflation pressure and load conditions. A pressure is applied against the tire sidewall by a rotating disc (10) to deform the sidewall according to a profile comprising at least two portions with opposite curvatures (C1-C3), concave, and convex. An Independent claim is also included for a tire testing apparatus employed in the above method. The apparatus includes the rotating drum, an arm for supporting the tire, a setting mechanism for causing rotation of the tire on the rotating drum, and the rotating disc. The disc can be moved transversely with respect to the tire between a first non-operative position, in which it is not in contact with the tire sidewall, and a second operative position, in which it penetrates into the tire sidewall for a predetermined depth.
