A fullerene derived metallocene of formula Rm-F-(MXpAq)n (I) is claimed: F : fullerene core; R : H, O, 1-20C optionally branched alkyl, 6-40C aryl, 7-40C alkyl aryl and 7-40C aryl alkyl; M : transition metal; X : halogen, hydride, alkyl, aryl or chelating group; A : optionally substituted cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, fluorenyl a fused ring containing cyclopentadienyl, indenyl or fluorenyl moiety; m, n : 1-10; (p+q)+1 : oxidation state of M. Independent claims are included for: (1) a fullerene derived metallocene of formula Rm-F-(MXt-A-R2>-A)n (II); (2) the preparation of (II) by reacting a fullerene core (F) with a metallocene of formula MRXpAq (III), whereby (III) has been prepared by reacting a species of formula MXp+1Aq with a reducing agent (IV); (3) the preparation of (I) by reacting (F) with (III); (4) the preparation of an olefin polymer using the fullerene-derived metallocene in the presence of an activating cocatalyst (V).
