Abstract

The chromatic dispersion compensator includes an optical circulator (2) or directional coupler having three ports (51,52,53). An input transmission path (1) is connected to a first port (51) of the optical circulator (2), and a third port (53) of the optical circulator (2) is connected to the output transmission path (3). A second port (52) of the optical circulator (2) is connected to a dispersion compensating optical fibre (4) and the chirped grating (5) is connected to an end of the dispersion compensating optical fibre (4). The dispersion compensating optical fibre (4) and the chirped grating (5) provide reverse chromatic dispersion characteristics to the chromatic dispersion characteristic of the input and output transmission path. The optical signal is incident into the first port (51) from the transmission path, and is made to go out to the chirped grating (5) from the second port (52). The signal is incident from the chirped grating (5) to return to the second port (52), and is made to go out to the output transmission path from the third port (53).
