Abstract
The invention relates to a thermotropic liquid crystal copolyester amide derived from phenyl hydroquinone which is capable of giving rise to an anisotropic liquid phase over a wide temperature range, typically 250-400 degree C. The copolyester amide is essentially formed from the following monomer units: a) a unit derived from phenylhydroquinone b) a unit derived from an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or from a mixture of two or more aromatic dicarboxylic acids c) a unit derived from aromatic monomers which introduce amide links into the polymer chain d) optionally, a unit comprising aromatic groups bound to the polymer chain by means of oxygen atoms. The polymer is produced by polycondensation in the molten state and can be used either for the manufacture of thermoformed, extruded or spun manufactured articles having strong mechanical properties and high heat resistance, or for mixing with thermoplastic polymers in order to improve the mechanical properties and workability of the latter. <IMAGE>
