Abstract

A cross-flow type electrolytic cell is proposed, especially for the clean-up of waste water with emulsified and/or suspended contaminants by electro-flocculation and/or electro-floatation. The proposed equipment is arranged as follows:- the reaction space (1) is provided with a waste water inlet connection (6), vertical plate-type anodes (2) arranged in parallel and connected to a DC source, and similar cathodes (3). The separation space (8) is located downstream of the reaction space. The cross-flow electrolytic cell (10) contains at least two elemental cells (A,B) each with an anode and a cathode. The anodes (2) and the cathodes (3) are located in alternate positions. The electrodes (2,3) are attached to the walls and the floor of the cell in a water-tight manner, but are electrically insulating from the walls and the floor. The electrodes are fitted at right angles to the direction of flow determined by the inlet (6) and the outlet (4) lcoations. The electrodes extend upwards to the level of the outlet (4). The elemental cells (A.B) are connected through opening(s) in the electrodes.
