A process for the preparation of alcohols by the reaction of reducing the corresponding epoxides through hydrogen transfer using a hydrogen donor as a reducing agent (in the specific instance a secondary alcohol) in the presence of a homogeneous catalytic system comprising: a) a rhodium salt or complex, b) an at least bidentate nitrogen-containing ligand, c) an inorganic base is described.
