Abstract
A digital signal 14 which identifies the characteristics of a television broadcast is substituted for the video signal proper 16 in one of the lines of the frames of the broadcast signal. The encoding is done preferably by a redundancy scheme, with transmission of the same informational message 20 in consecutive frames, preferably either in direct form or in complemented form, in order to avoid the risk of the possible interpretation of a video signal as the encoded signal. The digital signal 14 preferably comprises a prologue or preamble 18, which identifies the signal as such, likewise furnishing, via an initial band 18a of constant level, a reference for the synchronisation of the receiver. The informational message can be subdivided into several portions, each of which is intended to be carried by a corresponding digital signal 14, while a flag 20b for completion of same makes it possible to identify upon reception the portion of the message involved, and whether the transmission is in direct or complemented form. The digital signal is preferably transmitted with a sufficiently low symbol frequency so as not to produce significant changes, even by virtue of the transit of the encoded signal, [in?] systems of non-professional standard. <IMAGE>
