Abstract
In a process for the preparation of N-phosphonomethyl glycine from iminodiacetic acid, the following steps are performed in sequence, in a single reactor, with appreciable energy saving and reduction in plant and labour costs: the phosphonomethylation of iminodiacetic acid with phosphorous acid, formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid; elimination of Cl- ions by distillation in the presence of sulphuric acid, and oxidation of the reaction mixture thus obtained by addition of hydrogen peroxide.
