Abstract
The microcrystalline form of meclophenamic acid is obtained by hot-dissolving the active substance in a suitable organic solvent, miscible with water, in the presence of a surfactant such as polysorbate 80, and reprecipitating the product from the solution by adding abundant water. Suitable solvents are dioxane, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether and polyethylene glycol 400, and in particular a mixture of these last two. The precipitate obtained is in the form of a white, microcrystalline powder with crystals of a diameter between 2 and 40 microns. Meclophenamic acid in the form of microcrystals is more rapidly absorbable and therefore more effective as an analgesic, especially in the formulation which can be administered in drops for oral use.
