Abstract
The present industrial invention relates to a device made up of an endotracheal tube modified in such a way as to allow, in addition to normal endotracheal intubation, a simultaneous periodic and repeatable spraying of drugs onto the lower larynx and onto the trachea in the course of artificial ventilations for general anaesthesia or for intensive resuscitation treatments. Characteristic of the invention is a device for the spraying of drugs, local anaesthetics and anti- inflammatories, applied to a normal endotracheal tube, which ends immediately before the start of the cuff thereof with a sieved silicone sleeve which allows more homogeneous diffusion of the drugs. On administering a local anaesthetic, via the device integral with the endotracheal tube, rapid topical laryngo-tracheal anaesthesia occurs. Using other drugs an anti-inflammatory action on the same anatomical structures can also be obtained. Furthermore, both the topical laryngo-tracheal anaesthesia and the anti-inflammatory action are reproducible by the same procedure if the pharmacological effect induced by the preceding administration fails. It is therefore a device which is convenient to apply and easy to use and which allows the double effect of intubation and topical laryngo-tracheal anaesthesia to be achieved with a single operation; it also allows these two co-existing conditions to be maintained without further operations apart from that of administering the requisite amount of drug with a normal syringe by means of the special connection, subject to deflation of the cuff after each decurarization. Moreover, this apparatus, by stopping before the start of the endotracheal cuff, does not interfere in the slightest with the necessary expansion of the cuff. It is therefore a device which allows the use of repeatable methods which are easy to carry out and non- invasive for the patient.
