Abstract

This industrial invention relates to the possibility of transforming the free asbestos powders and fibres contained within materials used for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes, in concentrations exceeding 10,000 mg/kg, into other minerals belonging to other groups, by heat treatment. The transformation is carried out by heat treatment, particularly, the material containing the free asbestos powders and fibres is maintained at a temperature of T= 950 degrees C for one hour. The principal aim of this process is the mineralogical transformation of a waste defined as "toxic and harmful" under Presidential Decree 915/82 and which on the basis of article 4.2.3.3 of the provisions of 27/7/84, in relation to the application of article 4 of the aforementioned Presidential Decree, must be disposed of in a "toxic and harmful" waste disposal facility of second category type C. Following transformation, this material no longer contains asbestos and may be defined in compliance with Presidential Decree 915/82 article 2 paragraph 5 "special waste" in that it is "waste treatment activity residue". Due to this, on the basis of article 4.2.3.2 of the ministerial provisions of 27/7/84, cited previously, they may be disposed of in a second category type B waste disposal facility.
