The fastening device and boot e.g. for motor cycling cross-country comprises fastening device with slider (25) and guide (13) fastening members which engage with each other with pawls (33) on slider engaging rachet teeth on guide to clasp together corresponding parts of upper of sports shoe (1) until release is required. Between slider and guide is one way stop means (22,23) actuated by pulling on the operation lugs (37) for releasably making the slider and guide unitary in one of the two directions of sliding.
