Abstract
Weeds are controlled in crops by applying at least one pyridine deriv. of formula (I) and at least one diphenyl ether of formula (II). R1 = 1-4C alkyl; R2 = 1-4C alkyl or 3-6C cycloalkyl, or R1+R2 together are 3-6C cycloalkyl opt. substd. by Me; A = COOR3, CONHR6, CHO, CH2OH, COMe, COPh, CN, Me, CH = NOH, CH2COOH, CONHOH, CHR8OH, CH2CH2COOH, (III) or (IV); R3 = H; (lower alkyl)2C=N-; 1-12C alkyl (opt. substd. by 1-3C alkoxy, halo OH, 3-6C cycloalkyl, benzyloxy, furyl, opt. substd. phenyl, COOH, lower alkoxycarbonyl, CN or lower trialkylammonium); opt. substd. 3-12C alkenyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl; 3-10C alkynyl (opt. substd. by 1 or 2 1-3C alkyl); or an alkali, alkali metal, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Co, Pb, Ag, Ni, NH4 or substd. ammonium cation; R6 = H, OH, 3C alkenyl or alkynyl, or 1-4C alkyl (opt. substd. by OH or Cl); B = H, R4CO or R5SO2, provided that if it is not H, A = COOR3 (and R3 is not H or salt-forming cation), Me or CN; W = O and Y and Z are not alkylamino, OH or lower hydroxyalkyl; R4 = 1-11C alkyl, CH2Cl or opt. substd. phenyl; R5 = 1-4C alkyl or phenyl (opt. substd. by Me); W = O or S; R8 = 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; X = H, halo, OH or Me, but must be H when Y+Z are together (CH2)n; Y and Z = e.g. H; halo; 1-6C alkyl; 1-4C hydroxyalkyl; 1-4C alkylsulphonyl; or phenyl (opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, or halo), or Y and Z are together (CH2)n (n = 3 or 4) or (V) L and L1, Q and R7 = e.g. H; halo; 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulphonyl or haloalkyl; NO2; CN; opt. substd. phenyl etc.; but only one of these gps. can be other than H, halo, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy; X1 = halo, NO2 or CN; Y1 = H or halo; R9 = OH, 1-5C alkoxy, OCHR11.COR12, 1-4C amido or sulphonamido, or OM; R11 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R12 = 1-4C alkoxy; M = alkali metal, NH4 or 1-4C (alkyl or hydroxyalkyl)ammonium.
