Abstract
Synthetic tanning agent is prepd. by reaction of a mixt. contg. at least 30 mol% sulphonated phenol and/or cresols (I) and not more than 70 mol% phenol and/or cresols (II) in neutral or alkaline medium with at least 60 mol% HCHO (based on free o- and p-posns. of the aromatic rings) for 1-8 hr, at 60 deg.C to the bpt. Pref. compsns. contain 1 or more A1 salts, and 1 or more synthetic tanning agents having at least 2 aromatic rings contg. phenol gps., with the rings joined by methylene ether bridges connected to at least 1 or the rings in the 0-position while at least 30% of the rings contain sulphonate gps.
