Abstract

In a process for prepg. a cathode-diaphragm assembly for an electrolytic cell, in which the diaphragm consists of a layer of entangled asbestos fibres deposited on the cathode, the improvement comprises (i) first depositing a temporary, protective material (I) on the cathode, (I) being resistant to removal during deposition of the fibres and formation of the fibrous entanglement and being removable subsequently so as to expose the cathode while leaving the diaphragm intact, and (ii) then depositing the diaphragm and forming the fibrous entanglement so as to form a self-adherent diaphragm, which conforms to, and is spaced from, the cathode and which can be removed without damaging the cathode. The assembly is used in conjunction with an anode or electrolytic cells for the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solns., the diaphragm sepg. the 2 electrodes. (I) prevents adhesion of the fibrous diaphragm to the cathodic catalyst while not inhibiting adhesion of the diaphragm to itself and to (I). The front side of the cathode, i.e. the side facing the diaphragm partakes therefore fully in the cathodic reaction resulting in an effective cell voltage reduction of 0.05-0.20 volts or more.
