Abstract
A novel contact lens has the following features: (i) it consists of a carrier optical part (1) and a hydrophilic support (2) mediating contact with the eye, the two parts being of diff. materials; (ii) support (2) is divided into at least two independent pieces protruding above a concave side of the lens and led from the lens circumference towards its centre, with gaps left between individual pieces of support (2); (iii) support (2) is of a water-swelling synthetic crosslinked hydrogel having, when fully swollen with physiological saline, a swelling capacity of 40-95%; (iv) carrier (1) is of a transparent material, e.g. poly(HEMA) or poly(Me methacrylate) having elasticity modulus at least twice as high as that of support (2); and (v) support (2) forms a gap of at least 0.01mm between the eye surface and uncovered carrier (1). Also claimed is mfr. of the lens by forming the protruding pieces of support (2) on the concave side of the lens by applying a crosslinkable soln. of hydrophilic monomer or polymer, followed by crosslinking after solvent (e.g. MeOH or EtOH) evapn.
