Abstract
In the continuous casting of a light alloy, the melt is poured into the mould at 10-150 deg.C above the liquidus temp. of the alloy and subjected to ultrasound of intensity 2-60 W/sq.cm., distributed throughout the cross-section of the melt in the mould by an ultrasonic source immersed to a depth of 1/12 to 1/4 of the wavelength of the sound in the melt. When the melt passes through a porous material in the mould to enhance purification, the distance between the ultrasonic source and the porous material is 1/12 to 1/4 of the wavelength of the sound in the melt. The ultrasonic treatment reduces the solid non-metallic inclusion content by a factor of 2 and the hydrogen content by a factor of 2-3, thus enhancing plastic deformability during casting and subsequent deformation of the casting. The casting also has a grain size equal to or smaller than that of a dendritic cell, thus further improving plastic deformability.
