Abstract

The electronic ballast supplies high frequency alternating current to gas discharge lamps and is connected to a three phase supply rectified to direct current before electronic inversion to between 20 and 30 kHz. The inverter circuit, suitable for use as an electronic ballast, takes DC power from a rectifier circuit and comprises two transistors (44,45) forming the active elements of a high-power, push-pull, class-B, tuned-collector, current-driven oscillator. The tuned circuit comprises inductors or windings (52,53) of an inverter transformer (54), and is tuned to resonate at a frequency of at least 20kHz in order to enhance lamp efficiency, be inaudible, and to make possible the use of small and practically loss-free circuit components. The same high frequency transformer (54) may have additional windings to produce heating supplies for the lamp filament heaters.
