Abstract
Controlled release formulation comprises 5-85 wt.% of an antimicrobial agent (I) dispersed throughout a copolymer derived from 60-95 wt.% lactic acid and 40-5 wt.% glycolic acid, the copolymer having an inherent viscosity of 0.08-0.30 (measured in chloroform) and a wt. ave. mol.wt. 6000-35000. The formulation, which is in combination with suitable excipients and carriers, is biodegradable into readily metabolised substances and normal active ingredient metabolic prods. Pref. the copolymer comprises 60-90 (esp. 70-80) wt.% lactic acid and 40-10 (esp. 20-30) wt.% glycolic acid, and has a viscosity of 0.1-0.25 (esp. 0.13-0.23) and a mol.wt. of 15000-30000.. The formulation is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of infectious diseases in animals such as swine, ruminants and poultry, e.g. mycoplasmal pneumonia in young pigs and contagious pneumonia in young calves. It is pref. administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection or implant, but can also be given by other suitable routes (e.g. orally). The formulation can deliver the active agent (I) over a prolonged period of time; and when biodegraded it leaves no undesirable residues in animal tissues.
