Abstract

A process for producing crystalline vinyl aromatic polymers having a predominantly syndiotactic structure, comprises polymerising the vinyl aromatic monomers (I) either alone or mixed with up to 30 wt.% of another copolymerisable ethylenically unsatd. monomer, in the presence of catalytic amts. of a catalyst system (II). (II) comprises the reaction prod. of : (a) a titanium cpd. contg. at least one Ti-N bond, and (b) 10 power4-1 mole/l w.r.t. reaction mixt. of an organoaluminium cpd. contg. at least one oxygen atom, bound to one Al atom or located between two Al atoms. The molar ratio of (II b) to (II a) is 1-1000 pref. 10-200. (II a) and (II b) are supported on organic or inorganic carriers such as SiO2, Al2O3 or Mg halides.
