Abstract
Prepn. of 2-methyl-2-(o-methoxy phenoxy)benzo(1,3)dioxan-4-one of formula (I) is claimed.: One process comprises reacting acetylsalicyloyl chloride (II) with a 5-30 wt.% stoichiometric excess of 2-methoxyphenol (III) in an inert solvent at 40-150 deg.C for 12-48 hr. Another process comprises (a) reacting acetylsalicyclic acid with an anhydride (IV) of formula (R1R2R3C-CO)20 (where R1-R3 are H, halogen or 1-3C alkyl) in an oprotic solvent at 20-70 deg.C until a clear soln. is obtd., (b) allowing the mixt. to stand at room temp. for 10-720 min, and (c) reacting the mixt. with a stoichiometric amt. of (III) at 10-40 min. for 1-48 hr. (I) has antitussive, antipyretic and antiinflammatory activity. The processes give good yields (e.g. 40-60 ) in reproducible manner (cf. BE 890731). (FL)
