Abstract

Water to be sterilised flows through regions (14, 15) containing ultra violet lamps (16, 17) each of which operates at a power level sufficient to effect complete sterilisation. If one lamp should fail another, others of the lamps immediately switch to higher power to ensure continued complete sterilisation of the water. Pref. the flow is divided such that half the flow passes through each sterilisation chamber (14, 15) and each lamp (16, 17) operates at half power, but if a lamp fails valves (18, 19, 20, 21) are switched to cause all the flow to pass through the chamber containing a still operative lamp and the lamp power is switched from half to full power. Failure of a lamp can cause an audible alarm to be generated.
